Story this morning from an SMS on SEN is that Essendon has signed MAl Michael to a 2 year contract and will use their PSD pick 2 to get him.

Thoughts ?

mal michael has retired due to outside commitments, he will only play reserve football where he gets the time to persue these ambitions

Brisbane have been on SEN and are threatening legal action and accussing Essendn of draft tampering. This would tend to suggest that where there is smoke there is fire !

Surely it's only draft tampering if we approached Michael before he retired.

If Brisbane release him, I can't see they have a leg to stand on.

He's joining us next season.

Was always going to play AFL with an AFL club in 2007.
Poor Mal needs the money unfortunately.

I agree Longy ...I suspect it is more frustration from Brisbane at this stage. Having said that, I am keen to get big Mal on board. It would be nice to play Brisbane, Port and Sydney and not worry about their key forward kicking between 6-10 goals before we start. It could also prolong Fletch's career with any luck.

Mal Michael to join Bombers

Essendon Football Club today confirmed it had reached agreement on a two-year deal with former Brisbane player Mal Michael and that it would be taking him with its first selection (second overall) in the pre-season draft.

The 29-year-old, three-time Premiership player will commence training with Essendon in mid-December. Michael has played 201 games for Collingwood and Brisbane.

"We believe he has a lot of football still left in him and his move back to Melbourne has caused him to re-think his retirement. We think he can be a very important player for us for at least the next couple of years," Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said.

"He will provide us with some real strength and experience in defence while we continue to develop some of our younger players for key defensive roles. Physically he is in very good condition and the time away has freshened him up mentally."

If he was out of contract, no problem. But he and Lions severed a contract part-way through to "retire", which would present the AFL with a conundrum. Would I be correct in saying this is a loophole which has not yet been tested? Do the AFL have the option of not registering the contract?

I don't mind at all, he'll definately strenghten our weak backline. Nash and Lee are still developing and will hopefully get significant game time next year but aren't 22 game players yet IMO. As long as he helps us win games that's all I care about.

Wonder what it will do to Hansen's hopes at being drafted number 2, wouldn't diminish every chance. Could very well be Leuenberger or Gumbleton, unless we really do want Selwood

I'm wrapped that we have sucured big Mal, but i have just a few questions. No doubt he will be great for us, as jodo said, against those key forward who dominate us each time they play us, but where will he play other weeks? Is he mobile enough to hold down CHB? Will he and Fletch tag team opposition forwards? Will he only play when required? I'm sure the club would have thought this through but im wondering if you guys have any thoughts.

Sheedy said ages ago they were after a big name - if it was Michael- we are gone. I hope this doesn't cost us draft picks

Yeah, sure. I understand that.

But if the bloke walks away from his current club and has a change of heart, are Essendon not then permitted to talk to him?

I don't believe Essendon tried to talk Michael into leaving Brisbane under the guise of a retirement so we could pick him up in the draft. And believe me, if we did, I'd be the first to critisise.

At the moment, I can only go on what was in the article provided on the EFC website and that states the break and time away has made Michael rethink his retirement. If that's the case, I can't see what can be done about it or where the tampering occurs.

If he's retired and changes his mind, is he or should he be obliged only to go to Brisbane? Brisbane would still have to draft him, give then he's been delisted and a contract no longer exists and if no-one else can draft him except Brisbane, isn't that draft tampering in itself?

I doubt they could prove anything anyway, but the concept of players "retiring" mid-contract citing lack of desire/motivation, then being drafted somewhere else is all a bit dodgy. A bit like in the NRL with the Steve Turner/Gold Coast Titans business ATM, I don't imagine the AFL would be entirely happy with the notion.

He basically replaces Solly. That can't be a bad thing really, especially given we improved our draft position.

Actually nothing like it. Turner agreed to terms with the GC and then changed his mind and wanted to stay simply because he was getting a game in first grade. He has stated he agreed to go to the GC because he wasnt in first grade with Melbourne and he thought he could be playing first grade with the Titans. But none of this is really relevant for this board other than to say it is completly different to the Mal Micheal case.

Did he write us off after 8 games ?

After 8 games we would have been 1-7. I'd write us off too.

He came out not long before the mid-year break and told clubs to make sure they signed up their players because we'd be coming after them. Although he was speaking more of young players and that's where the whole Franklin drama eventuated from.

I don't think Michael was on the radar then.

Have you worked out what you are going to whinge about when Sheeds is gone in 2008?

I meant more with the option of the AFL not registering the contract. Surely anyone can see the potential minefield this opens up. What would you think if Dempsey had up and left citing homsickness and just wanting to play footy with his mates, then signed with us, then signed with us in the PSD (yeah big hypothetical I know)?

I doubt we wouldn't have released him from his contract.

Once you release a bloke, regardless of the reason, I don't know what the AFL can do unless there is proof that Essendon forced Michael's hand towards retirement. I don't believe that is the case here.

Regardless Brisbane would be pissed. Imagine a few twists and turns in this story to come wether the Lions have a leg to stand on or not.

As far as I know, the AFL have to sign off on any contract and any player that enters the PSD.

We can't sign/draft Michael without the permission of the AFL. Once/if that has happened, there is no penalty for EFC.

I respect Brisbane for what they have done, I'm not about to feel sorry for them.
