Quality fullback, 26 yrs old, Out of contract this year.

Do we go for him?

I say yes.

hmmm, we'd be forced to give up quite a fair bit, and I don't know if we need to.

We've shown that we can survive with a second string defence, basically by starving the opposition forwards of the ball through a dominant midfield. Combined with the one class act in Wirrpunda down back we are capable of stopping teams scoring big scores against us.

But if he got into the PS draft then I'd be very interested, but I'd doubt he'd stay around till such time as we had a pick.

Jonathan Hay's value is increasing every week. I reckon he would be a better fit at West Coast, but only for Judd.

I agree Hay or Scarlett for that matter would be better, but both will still be under contract and are unlikely to be traded unless it's for someone like Judd. If Judd stays we have no hope of getting either. Brisbane will probably settle for draft picks and/or a fringe player for Michael now that they have to factor in their reduced salary cap allowances into future contracts.

I suspect Judd will stay, but wouldn't complain if we got Hay for him

If he was available I'd say go for. He's a pretty important player in their lineup though. I would think that Brisbane would prefer to get rid of some other players first.

Probably should have worded it better "I'd be happy if we got Hay as part of a trade for Judd". Obviously Judd's worth more than a direct swap.
Either way, I doubt Hay will be on the table which is why I'm keen on Mal Michael coming out of contract.

If Judd leaves it's only going to be because we can't offer the big bucks. Mal Michael would be less of a strain on our cap and I'm sure Brisbane would be interested in any draft picks we would get for Judd seeing as how they will need to factor in reduced salary cap allowances soon.

I dont think Judd would consider leaving because we couldnt offer the "big bucks". Would definetly be more family reasons....

If, at 20 he starts earning the 500K thats being thrown around in the media, the pressure on him in Melbourne would be a nightmare..... i can only see him going due to family, not money

Family reasons or not, if he goes it will be to the biggest bidding Victorian team.

If he goes, then yes, he'd be a fool not to go to the highest bidder. Still the question of "if" though...

I am feeling more confident Judd will stay. Just a few things leaking out by the media and so forth and starting to quash the rumours he is a definate to go home.

just a thought here.....

with a thread regarding David Haynes and Geelong's interest in him, perhaps we could propose a four way trade with, allowing Haynes to move back to Victoria, Michael to us, and Sam Power to Brisbane to re-unite with his borther.

The only other thing would have to be worked out what goes from Geelong to the Dogs, but given Mal Michael is a cut above the other players in the trade, a late 1st/early 2nd round pick would have to be thrown in by the rest of the club I'd think.....

Worth a shot.

here perhaps one;

there was a bit of interest on the Dogs board about James Bartel from Geelong.

Eagles gain Mal Michael
Eagles lose David Haynes, pick 16 (assuming the ladder positions are as they are at current)

Cats gain David Haynes, pick 16
Cats lose James Bartel, pick 3

Lions gain Sam Power, pick 3
Lions lose Mal Michael

Dogs gain James Bartel
Dogs lose Sam Power

we'd get a win in that one, while Geelong get a bit hard done by. Lions maybe also lose out fractionally. Dogs finish about equal.

If we traded for say pick 10-11, and used the pick to trade to Geelong, you'd have a very even 4-way trade in my view.

MAL'S GOING NOWHERE!
(he said so himself)

How about a source, then we can let this die a natural death.

Mal Michale would be a good pick-up, but you'd think he's happy in Brisbane. Jonathon Brown would be staying put too-he's in line to replace Lynch as the "backboard" of the Lions attack (that's if Lynch ever retires).

If Judd has to go, could you squeeze two first round picks out of the Vic club and on-trade one to Brissie? What would Brisbane take for mal? 5, 3?

Mal Michael is the type of player who would go to the highest bidder, it was just a couple of weeks ago he said in the media that players taking pay-cuts can only go so far, a sure sign he's in it for the money now that he's got a couple of flags under his belt.

Geelong would never go for this. Haynes is hardly going to solve their key forward problems, and Bartel has far more upside. Even if the picks were reversed they wouldn't go for it.

I'd be interested to find out what kind of money Mal is on. Didn't he reject Collingwood's offer over $1m over three years, to take up an offer from Brisbane around $400k a year?

That's almost $20,000 per kick! :D

If he's on $400K he is well overpaid. Around the $250K ballpark is what he's worth IMO.
