As much as ive liked MM and i still believe he is one of the top coaches in the league i dont think the players respect him anymore and ****ed if i know why so he should probably move on this year

But if we just sign Buckley without even looking at other prospects like Brisbane did Voss, we will put our selves even further in the shit

All of Buckley, Hardwick, Viney, Alan Richardson, Scott Burns and Buckley should be interviewed and then a decsion made, no quick rush in because we must have an ex captain we did it with shaw and we paid for years

Yep that would be the sensible thing.

Buckley has a much better footballing brain than Shaw. Will definitely make a way better coach.

Sacking a coach in the middle of the year is a bad move so I voted no but a change at seasons end could have its merits. I'll wait until at least round 16 before I start calling for coaches blood. These boards are going to get horribly boring by seasons end if we are already speaking about sacking coaches.

Agreed.

But I can't help thinking that we will always have the pick of the highly credentialed
coaches given that we pay nearly twice as much as most other clubs.

We wont always have the option to pick up a Nathan Buckley.

It was teh sensible thing when shaw took over we didnt do it

i remember being told as a boy Shaw would be a premiership coach as he played on smarts and not talent. Im still waiting for this to happen

Ive also been told Voss has a great football brain, 93 points today? couldnt shut us down last week?

Uf we hire buckley with a full process which proves the best candidate then **** me strap yourself in for another uneventful half a decade.

Also we change from an old experienced coach, we go to a young coach like teh hawks did we clarkson, no more poaching ex "heroes" still hanging on former glory like choco

I'd be happy for Bucks to coach the side with one caveat and that is AFTER he's done an apprenticeship at our or another club. Show me a guy who's gone into the coaching caper raw from the commentary box or with little experience and I'll show you a train wreck

I'll say yes to this poll, as long as you take the "09" off.

There is no advantage what so ever in sacking MM now, and there is no chance of that happening anyway.

I think there will be a massive revolt if Buckley puts his hand up and says he wants the Collingwood job, and we dont give it to him, but there are other options, that should at least be considered before making a decision.

Either way, we wont find out till September/October this year who our 2010 coach is, Eddie will stick to his word on that.

If the club just signed Buckley without considering other options it would be pretty stupid. Its all about going through the proper process of picking a new coach and not just assuming Buckley will be an amazing coach cause he was a champion player and has wowed us commentating.

No need to sack him mid year, will do nothing for the club

we wont always have teh option to get a richo, burns, Scott, hardwick, Viney who all have very big wraps

If Buckley wasnt our hero ex captain, the push for him wouldnt be as strong. All the others should also be ahead of buckley as they were all good players and have been good to excellent assitant coaches as well

What you say is spot on.

But the problem is that the coaching merry go round doesn't wait until the end of they year.

MM will most likely have a handshake deal with Richmond well before the end of the year.

If Bucks gets signed prior to then elswhere, and Hardwick to Port or wherever things are looking pretty grim for us.

The coaching game is a bit like the old bar fight, whoever gets in fist usually wins.

N.Buckley

Playing midfield coach 06/07 Collingwood.
All Aus assistant coach 09.
AIS assistant coach 08.
U/16 AIS coach 09.

So he isn't exactly Voss fresh.

posted in other thread but relevant to this also.

Voss had done similar stuff with juniors as well iirc.

Not worth much, the more experienced coachs will pick him apart like MM did Voss last week

True.

But we will always have the pick of the best coaches of the day. So the Hardwicks, Vineys of 2013 or whenever Bucks is on the way will always be in our mix. Or Clarkson, Roos, Thompson whoever else is available in 3 years we will be a good cahnce to get because we will pay like noone else. We can always get another hired gun like MM.

Buckley is the classic high risk, high reward investment. And yes if he wasn't our hero ex-captain he wouldn't be in the mix. But he is and he is and I hope the club takes the gamble on him.

It all counts and of course they will be learning on the job like voss.
Even those who do a full blown apprenticeship say they learn more on the job then they did as the assistant.

Buckley may not be the answer but I know 1 thing for certain, MM deffinately isn't.

Thats guilding the lilly, he's never been a coach at Collingwood fantastic on and off field leader yes, coach no.

All Aus assistant coach 09

Different shaped ball and a game that hardly resembles AFL.

AIS assistant coach 08

Kids

U/16 AIS coach 09

If you're alluding to the Vic Country under 16's then they're even younger kids.

Bucks is a perfectionist and I doubt very much he'd enter the profession half baked which is something he's said many times and a point Guy McKenna made in today's Hun.

I remember reading an official cfc.com.au article stating he was one of our midfield coach whilst playing.

Not just an off field leader.

Also it may not be men he is coaching but none the less he is dipping his toe in the water better then nothing is what i was getting at...

Despite what they say the higher ups at Collingwood would have privately made a decision before seasons end if they want MM to continue in 2010 and would be deciding what they were looking for in the next coach (not this early however). I doubt we are going to be left in the crapper in October with our wishlist of coaches all signed somewhere else.

The problem is MM will not accept any less than a 2yr extension mid-year.

There is no way we can wait until the end of the year if we want Malthouse. It will be re-sign him for 2 years mid season or sign someone else before the seasons end.

The "lets see how we go this year, then decide on weather to extend him for another year" luxury will not be afforded to Collingwood by MM.

He is the No. 1 mercenary in football. Which is why as you say, the club will make their decision well before the seasons end.
