NEW YORK -- Stephon Marbury would return to his hometown as part of a multiplayer trade tentatively agreed to Monday by the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns, a source told The Associated Press.

The Knicks would acquire Marbury and Penny Hardaway from Phoenix for Antonio McDyess, Howard Eisley, Charlie Ward, the rights to Milos Vujanic and cash, according to the source, who is close to one of the players and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Another source, close to one of the teams, said there were additional players involved.

Full Story.

Well Marbury gets to go home, and the Suns save a ton of cap room (Ward and McDyess expire after this year). My money's on Marbury forcing this trade ala Minny to NJ, have never been a fan of his selfish attitude.

EDIT: The Suns also get 2 first rounders and cash, AND Lampe.

This is a great trade for the Suns. They have absolutely r*ped Thomas and the Knicks. The Suns are on there way to the championship in the next 3-4 seasons. Marion, Stoudemire, Lampe, Vujacic, Barbosa, Cabarkapa, two first round picks next year and cap room, whilst getting rid of Marbury, who has been good, but not good enough for team success.

I don't understand the Knicks. They have no foundation for prolonged success. They consign themselves to walking the fine line between getting the last playoff berth in the East and the lottery for some time to come. But, this I guess you don't appoint Isiah unless you are desperate.

Holy crap!!!1!

I actually feel the Knicks now amongst the top 8 in the East, providing Marbury continues his form from Phoenix. And they have street cred! So getting a Marbury Knick jersey...

Despite getting rid of their best player, this is the trade that could make Phoenix an absolute superpower in the near future. Marion, Stoudemire, Carbarkapa, Barbosa, Lampe, Vujanic, Johnson... with a ton of cap room this off-season, and TWO first-rounders. Oh me, oh my.

Heres the confirmed deal form NBA.com

New York acquires Stephon Marbury, Anfernee Hardaway and Cezary Trybanski

Phoenix acquires Howard Eisley, Maciej Lampe, Antonio McDyess, Charlie Ward, the draft rights to Milos Vujanic, an unconditional 2004 first-round draft pick and a conditional future first-round pick.

By Conditional what does that mean??

Teams are able to place certain conditions on traded draft picks, i.e. if the Knicks draft-pick lands in the top 3 this year, they get to keep it, and next year's pick will go to Phoenix. The following season it may be lottery (top 14) protected only. So if Knicks come like 2nd in the East, Phoenix will then get the pick...

Can ya dig?

Most likely to mean that if a 2005 pick is within the lottery the Knicks will keep the pick and give Suns a 2006 pick. 2006 pick would then likely to be,less (ie top two pick) conditional or unconditional.

Yeah, bankteller got it right... I got my wires crossed. The protection goes down in descending order, as in it may be top 21 protected, then lottery protected, then top 3 protected.

Just ask P&P about protection of lottery picks...

What are the Suns playing at?

They've effectively traded Jason Kidd for a broken down Antonio McDyess.

I know they wanted to move either Penny or Googs to clear cap room, but seriously, why on earth would you trade away one of the best young PG's in the game?

Dyess will split time with Amare soon, and is going to walk at seasons end anyway (he's a free agent), so it's one hell of a sacrifice to merely clear cap room.

On the salary cap, doesn't Howard Eisley have a massive contract anyway? If so, it defeats the purpose of the deal.

Meanwhile, Kurt Thomas is smiling. Not only has he assured his starting position, but he's finally got a quality PG to get him the ball. Watch Kurt light it up now.

IIRC, Phat... Googs, Dice and Ward are all off the cap at the end of the season. That leaves enough cash to make a run at Kobe.

Vujanic/Barbosa
Bryant/Johnson
Marion/Jacobsen
Stoudemire/Carbarkapa
Lampe/White

The new Chicago or the new Dallas?

Any other possible scenarios? Like, does anyone know of other FAs the Suns could have a run at?

Interesting to see how Marbury goes in the big New York market. He'd want to fire or I could see eating him alive. The Knicks did the right thing in keeping Thomas though. It's a better mix that they have now...not that I want to see New York do well.

Ward is only owed $2M though.

The Suns had one of the most expensive rosters in the league, obviously clearing Penny and Steph's contracts will help, but bringing in Eisley means that they still don't have the cash to compete with other teams in the hunt for Kobe.

Kobe will be a sign and trade anyway i guess, so unless they want to offload Amare, i can't see Kobe coming to Arizona.

It's a much better mix, but i see issues with sharing the ball around.

Steph has matured, but in his NJ days he was very selfish. He will still want his shots, KVH will **** and moan unless he gets his, Houston lives and dies by his shot attempt tally and Kurt Thomas also needs 10-12 shots a night.

To work, it is going to require Steph to restrain his offensive game in order to satisfy the Van Horn's and Houston's, who are worthless without plenty of looks at the basket.

Delighted with the deal :D
Steph gives us a top quality point guard who can be adequately backed up by Frank Williams, Moochie Norris and even Penny Hardaway.
Kurt Thomas should thrive in this lineup.

Van Horn
Thomas
Mutombo
Houston
Marbury

Hopefully it all pans out well on the court like it does on paper.

Damn, New York look good on paper atleast.

I can understand the move on Phoenix's behalf though, they weren't going to make the playoffs anyway and have taken on expiring contracts to set themselves up.

It's all well and good to take on expiring deals, but not at the expense of their PG for the next 6-7 years.

They've given up gold for the right to prospect for gold in a years time. In any business that is a high risk-low return venture.

One interesting twist is Marbury and Van Horn do not get along at all. The Suns will likely buy out Ward by the end of the week, and save themselves an extra 3 mill.

P&P, by clearing Hardaway's contract (who was set to make over 30mill the next 2 seasons), along with Ward's 6 mill and Googs' 12, it will put them on about 36 mill (including Eisley's 6 mill he makes) next season. Add the first rounders and that goes to about 38 mill. If the Suns can get it back to 35 mill through more deals, which has been rumoured, they are in a great position. With the cap set to land around 45 mill, the Suns have the space to go after Kobe next season.

10 mill is a slight paycut for Kobe, but Phoenix is a very popular organisation, both management and location-wise.

Yeah, agree with that. Marbury has been playing exceptionally well. They had a good trio to build around in Marbury, Marion and Stoudamire... who knows what they are planning.

Rumors are abound that Van Horn and Williams are to be packaged for Sheed.

True, but Marbury has been traded 4 times in his career - that shouldn't happen for a kid of his talent, so sooner or later you have to question other issues about him.

The NBA is a hit and miss business, and Phoenix have underlined this. They've accepted things aren't working at the moment, and rather than wait until Stoudemire comes back, they're prepared to give up a star in Marbury for a chance to get a big start on rebuilding. They pick up two of the best young talents Europe has to offer, clear significant cap room and add a couple of first rounders. If it doesn't work out, then they've made a mistake, but at the same chance they could easily be laughing a few seasons down the road.

Currently they have $7M spare, i cannot see any other trades being able to reduce that given the only high paid players left on the roster are Googs and Matrix.

$7M isn't nearly enough to get Kobe, the best they could do is land Steve Nash, who i see as a downgrade from Steph.

I couldn't see it happening. Portland wouldn't be silly enough to take on Van Horn's contract, and if Williams goes, who will back up Steph in the Big Apple?
