Thought we needed a MM thread on the Carlton board.
If the rumours are anything to go by, it seems Marc has made up his mind that he doesnt want to go to Brisbane. Great news for the Blues, you would think its a forgone conclusion that we would pick him up at number 1 in the draft.

Murphy knocks back Lions
09 September 2005 Herald Sun
Damian Barrett

HIGHLY SOUGHT Victorian teenager Marc Murphy has rejected an offer to play for Brisbane Lions under the father-son rule.

The rejection of the Lions' extraordinary overtures, including a lavish meet-and-greet dinner and a five-year contract offer, has left Carlton well placed to secure Murphy.

The Blues recruiting department is yet to rank this year's draftees, but it is understood there was a push inside the club this week to snare Murphy with the first priority selection in the national draft.

Collingwood, which has the second pick, is desperate to recruit the 18-year-old, 178cm, 75kg son of former Fitzroy great John Murphy.

Like Brisbane and Carlton, the Magpies have spent a lot of time wooing Murphy.

But their hopes now rely on Carlton opting to use the draft's No. 1 pick for a taller player, which was the Blues' initial aim with the priority selection.

It is understood Murphy informed the Lions last night of his decision to remain in Melbourne.

His father, John, refused to confirm the decision, but earlier had told the Herald Sun Murphy was old enough to determine his own future.

"It is all up to him, it is his decision to make and he is old enough to make it," John Murphy said. "It's a big decision, and that is why it has taken a while to make.

"Like all kids, he would like to be able to stay in Melbourne, but when it comes to the end of the day, he has to feel comfortable where he goes.

"He may decide he would be comfortable in Melbourne, the power of the home may be the thing that makes him stay, I don't know."

Murphy, a midfielder with the Oakleigh Chargers, is an AIS-AFL Academy graduate who won the Larke Medal as best player in the carnival while captaining Vic Metro at this year's under-18 championships.

The Murphy rejection is a blow to the Lions who, for the first time since Leigh Matthews arrived as coach, will attempt to be active in trade week.

"We have been a non-participant in the trade period, unless we have had to, as we did with Des Headland," Matthews said yesterday.

"But in the progression of our club, and this has nothing to do with the Scott brothers (Chris and Brad), if you reckon you can get some benefit out of it, and the player wants to do it, you might do it.

"There is no truth in the Scott thing on the basis there is no truth in anything.

"At this stage, we haven't spoken to any club about the Scott brothers, nor have we about any of our players.

"Eventually those sorts of things will come up."

Excellent news, hope we pick him up.

I actually feel a bit bad for Brisbane. :(

We've got Murphy, and now we want to rub their faces in it by taking Power.

I'd rather screw another club over.... Port Adelaide would do nicely! Salopek, come on down. ;)

Think outside the square like we (the Bulldogs) had to , I dont think a kid who had a dad as an ex-player ( so obviously coached well early) is the answer. A slow burner like I think we got in (Cooney) with no pedigree or a just learn as you go kid (like you found in Koutafides) is more what you should use your first round pick for.
Basically if an ex players kid is not advanced at "draft time" what hope would a "non ex players" kid have unless they possesed NATURAL talent.
RE : Too many Shaw's and Clokes running around Collingwood.

We have had the chance for Whitten's but our Bar has been set higher.

What?...............just judge each kid on their merits..........forget about their name and where they come from.

Marc Murphy is short! But he is brilliant at everything else! If you want to wet your appetite get a copy of Vic Metro v Country this year. Country fast out of the blocks and out to a big lead when Murphy says, enough of this, and takes over the game. Pity about him going to your club though, he would look good in black and white stripes. ;)

At least your club gets Xavier then. Makes our pick 4 look better and your pick 5 have a bit more depth to it. A big win for all the bottom 3 clubs.

Unfortunatly as I said earlier, having an expert coach him (his father), suggests he is more advanced than some others; who had to do it the hard way.
Problem with that is "Judd", versus "Hodge" scenario's.

I don't get your post Aker? ALL the recruiters love Murphy, and whats not to love, his height? He's a can't miss prospect so stop trying to reign on the parade.

stop thinking too deeply about it. The kid can play. :)

Luke Darcy was a father/son pick and is now your captain. Looking this year Ryder is the son of a East Fremantle player and Drum is the nephew of Damien Drum.
I dont think it hurts at all. Keeps the player a bit balanced and not get carried away having that sort of influence. Murphy seems to handle the pressure well and his dad would help in that regard about all the hype.

Funky, i think i'd prefer Power over Salopek.
Still think we're a chance with Bartell as well
