Marcos Baghdatis Scandal

He is an idiot, should never have done it let alone let people record it, obviously it would end up on YouTube.

Nothing will be done though.

It is bloody stupid and out of proportion. Turks and Greeks have lived together in harmony on Cyprus for years and years.

He wasn't saying he wants all turks out, he wants an end to the Turkish military occupation of parts of Cyprus ....

It isn't racist, discrimatory or anything and he is more than entitled to this opinion and shouldn't expect to be called out on it.

Baghdatis has always struck me as being a bit of a tool.

Especially in the after-match interviews when he thinks he's being entertaining and comical but, in my opinion, is anything but. His answers are so unfunny that they're generally beyond belief.

As another poster said, it's always very dangerous as a professional sportsman to leave yourself being open to being filmed in a situation like this too. What the hell was he thinking?

Not a clue why this is important to anyone. Wasn't it at a private party.
Good to see he loves his country, and is not another robot sportsperson.

GULP. So you're not even at least a little bit bothered by the concept of a high profile figure expressing what some people would undoubtedly believe are racist opinions?

Couldn't care less if he wished death to the world. Enjoy his tennis and I hope he beats Hewitt tommorrow.

Who here honestly goes out and starts ethnic/racial chants when partying?? If that's what he's in to, then whatever, but it's certainly not normal.

Not sure if he should be banned, but it wouldn't hurt the comp if he was. At least we'd get less of those toolish greek supporters who've been disrupting games, starting fights and hurling racial insults.

Did you actually see the video and understand any of it to be racist or are you going by what some people claim are racist opinions. There was nothing racist in what he said so i suggest you get your facts correct before posting utter garbage

Melbourne's Turkish Cypriot community has called for Greek Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis to be expelled from Australia after he was caught on video chanting anti-Turkish slogans.

Turkish Cypriots were furious Baghdatis had provoked their community, Australian Turkish Cypriot Cultural and Welfare Association president Hakki Suleyman said today.

"I have had a lot of calls from upset members stunned about this racist attack by a high-profile sportsman that breaches the racial vilification act," he said.

"This is a straight-forward provocation of our community and he is playing a different game to sport, he is not being a sportsman and should apologise.

"I am appalled and in this community we are living side-by-side with Greek neighbours we don't have problems with."

and then, further from Suat Yilmaz, secretary of the Australian Turkish Cultural Association:

"People will ignore him.

"But in any community there are stupid people.

"Baghdatis should not mix sport with politics."

--

The above is from AAP yesterday, and accords entirely with what I wrote in my post.

So I kindly suggest you get your facts correct before needlessly getting up on your high horse, champ.

Racist opinions against whom? The only thing they chanted about was Turkish soldiers - who have illegally occupied 1/3 of Cyprus for 30+ years- getting out of the Island. At no point did they make any racist remarks against Turkish-Cypriots or even Turks. Now if you know your European history- especially the part covering the 20th century- you would realise that there are two nations which have no right to demand apologies from anyone and about anything: the Germans and the Turks. Who is going to apologise to the Armenians and the Kurds for the physical and cultural genocide committed against them by the Turkish nation? The Germans did apologise to the Jewish people, and they do so every year when the Holocaust is commemorated. The Turks, though, threaten everyone (including the US) with diplomatic sanctions if they even mention the genocide of over a million Armenians as a historical fact.

Take it up with the groups mentioned, not with me.

All I pointed out was some people would undoubtedly find Baghdatis' anti-Turkish attitudes racially offensive. The quotes in my last post prove that's the case.

The quotes from your last post represent the views of the Turkish- Cypriot community. Nothing less, nothing more.

They prove nothing, other than that the particular group decided to take full advantage of the whole situation. You do not form an opinion about Gandalf by asking Sauron what he thinks about the wizard and his eternal enemy.

Read more, speak less, especially when you know nothing about the background of a particular topic. You do not know what Baghdatis said, you base your whole opinion on what the Turkish-Cypriots claim he said.

The group in the video, and in direct translation, were chanting: “Turks out of Cyprus”. Not Turkish-Cypriots, Turks. The United Nations has repeatedly called for the removal of the Turkish occupational forces from the island.

So, I am telling you again that Baghdatis - who may not even have participated in the chanting- does not have anything to apologise for. If some people choose to be offended because it suits their purposes, that is entirely their prerogative and problem.

Cheerio, have a good weekend.

That's quite something, considering you're choosing not to (or maybe you're simply not able to?) comprehend anything I've said and are arguing about an entirely separate set of issues.

Ok, Imagine that 1/3 of Australia is occupied by Indonesia and an Australian tennis player is at a private function during the French Open where they chant: “Indonesians out of Australia”. An ignorant French, who knows nothing about what’s happening in Australia, posts in a sports forum, expressing concerns that the Aussie’s comments will offend the Indonesian community in France. “Look” he said, “I am quoting this article, they are already offended”. Another Aussie posts in the same forum and basically says “who gives a stuff” and explains why no one should give a stuff. Do you have the ability to comprehend the above parable or not? Again, relax and enjoy tonight’s match, and may the best player win!

Despite how much you might want to keep suggesting I'm ignorant (which is, frankly, now getting very tiresome), the basic point is that a comment like "Turks out of Cyprus" could be interpreted about a million and one ways.

As could the comment "Indonesians out of Australia" in the imaginary scenario you've dreamt up.

You can say that there's nothing wrong at all with that statement and/or support Baghdatis' actions if you want to. That's your choice. But, how ever much you might want to defend him and/or say there's nothing in it, others will see a guy waving a flare and chanting the sentiment that he expressed in a completely different light altogether. That's life, buddy, and just because people don't happen to hold the same view as you do or apparently aren't attached to it as strongly, it doesn't necessarily mean they're stupid or ignorant.

As a side issue, I'm amused, btw, that you're implying that you're the one with the greater understanding of all the events at hand here while stating Baghdatis "may not even have participated in the chanting". Good God. Are you honestly trying to pretend that the video doesn't clearly show him doing that?

Re the specifics of matters in Cyprus, we could argue about them all day and all night long if we wanted to. That could include debating whether the issues are absolutely as black and white and as cast-iron as you seem to be suggesting (and whether there is, in fact, a clear aggressor and a clear victim), or whether they're not at least a tad more nuanced than that. We could even talk about the factors behind the Turkish invasion in the first place. Or maybe even the Greek-Cypriots' rejection of the UN-brokered settlement of the dispute in 2004.

However, those issues have not been part of my posts - no matter how much you might want to draw the connection.

My point has been that someone in Baghdatis' position should have been very very careful about getting mixed up in something so sensitive in this particular way. And that I can't fathom why he did it. Most high profile sporting figures well know the dangers of becoming associated with anything even remotely political (no matter the merits of the particular issue involved) - and actively resist it. At least during their careers anyway. Have a look at Federer's response to John McEnroe in 2004 about the last US presidential election and Roddick's answer to Bruce Mcavaney only a week or so ago about his feelings about Clinton and Obama if you want some vaguely-related examples.

As it happens, I suspect you almost certainly have absolutely no understanding of the background to my post to campbell, either. I reacted the way I did, and wanted to ask campbell the question I did, because she has made a number of strong comments on BF about racism-related subjects and issues in the past. Including the very recent past, in the case of the India-Australia Test series. I was intrigued to know where she was coming from in this case and how that tallied with other comments she'd made before. I got the answer I wanted, and moved on.

Maybe this should now be the end of our boorish one-on-one discussion too?

No need for all this political crap in a sports forum mate.

Well, it is rather historical stuff, not political. And it is certainly not “crap” for the Armenians. You should show more sensitivity towards other nationalities, otherwise the Armenian Association may ask for your expulsion from Australia and for a sincere and unreserved apology! If you do not like the post, report it to the administrators. The worst thing that can happen to me is to be banned from Big Footy. If, on the other hand, I wrote “crap” like this in the land of your ancestors, I would already have met the people with the long faces, wouldn’t I?

Its hard to believe your silly and gullible enough to believe whats written in papers or wherever you got this extract from.Ive seen the video and understand whats been said and he hasnt been racially offensive in any way and they are the facts not something that has obviously been beaten up by some journo in an effort to sell papers
