I wasn't having a go, I was just saying from what I have seen of him I am yet to see any signs of anything special.
Palmer was probably a bad example, but I think that Mayne for example has shown more.
And at not stage in my post did I write him off as a lost cause, all I said at this stage I have "serviceable" hopes for him

Mayne is playing in a much easier position for a youngster. Remember what happened last year when Drum got pushed forward? Oh thats right, he kicked 4 goals against the Crows. He's also had his share of injuries, which big blokes get when they are young.

Anyone remember Grover early in his career? How close did he come to being delisted? He was one guy that really struggled to put his body on the line, then one day something snapped...

Exacty. Backmen are often over looked when they do something good but are easily picked on when they stuff up. Drummy has one of, if not the best disposal efficiency at the club. And that is usually under pressure from the opposition forwards. You just have to check out some of his games on tape. To me, this means he is very footy smart and ready to play as a KKP.
Grover has never shied away from a contest. His role has changed since his debut, but his style of play hasn't.

Then one day at Subi he got cleaned up in a contest with one of the stronger forwards going around. (Maybe Fevola or Hall?) He went off injured but they patched him up and he came back on having taken a couple of angry pills. He ended up playing a blinder. Something seemed to click that day and he hasn't looked back since.

I thought Grover looked decent from his first game.
No doubt his defensive game has improved, though I seem to remember him taking allot more contested or pack marks when he first started. However this could have allot to do with being the third defender or loose man.

Grover was a half-back in his early days and Connolly was looking to develop him as a midfielder due to his strong attack on the ball and the contest. When Haddrill's injuries got the better of him, Grover was transformed into a key defender. It's not his ideal role and he has had to sacrifice aspects of his own game for the benefit of the team.

Grover can be quite handy when he pushes forward, I can remember some great running goals from him over the years, though very few recently.
I'm quite happy with Drum so far, looking forward to seeing him make a name for himself this season along with Foster and O'Brien.

To me Drum looks fine, but is still in reality a bundle of potential, as you'd expect of a tall player in the early stages of his career. We have plenty of running half-back talls (Mundy, Johnson, the re-signed Thornton), and what we need is meagre, angry talls, so I'm hoping Drum can become one of them. Drum seems a bit nice for that role, and I wish that Johnson was more able to take it on, but so far that just hasn't happened.

Johnson Drum Grover
Plus Mundy weaving his way back as an extra defender/midfielder. Way too tall. I'd be getting Suban into that in place of Thornton as quickly as possible. Thornton has to be able to shutdown a small forward or he doesn't have a place in the starting 22, and I'd reckon Suban is destined for that role. I'd even consider skinny Hill ahead of Thornton despite the thought that he may need a couple of pre-seasons.

Yes he did and I remember there was four or five players dropped because CC had had enough,Grover,Siegart ,Cunningham where the ones I remember,anyway Grover got in as a late change and played like it was his last chance and never looked back.
