We had better get used to it. When Freo make the GF, if we are playing say Geebung or Harwthorn, can you really see us getting a fair deal? Can only hope it's us v Sydney.

That's a pretty important point. Regardless of whether certain umpires try to screw us or not, the home team is almost always favoured due to the influence of the crowd. Some umpires are more affected by this than others... my perception of Nicholls is that he is one in particular that is influenced by it.

I have zero stats to back this up, as I don't know whether it's possible to get a hold of individual umps figures.

But crowd advantage is a big thing. And not just for the players motivation/energy levels. If we end up against Hawthorn at the G, prepare for a reaming by the umps... golden boys of the AFL and a big, noisy, entitlement-driven crowd.

Industrial strength lube required.

Interesting to note that I was chatting to Chelsea Roffey the goal umpire the other week before the game and I asked her how they choose the umpires for finals and if she'll make it.

She said they did a review of their umpiring calls throughout the year and the most accurate caller on decisions gets the nod. Glad they take this into consideration and not just use the most experienced umpires.

that fruitloop Nicholls only gets a guernsey because he is good at bouncing the ball.
Imagine if we get Nicholls, McBurney & Margetts in a game against west coast who have drafted Cotchin & Joel Selwood!
the free kick count against us could reach triple figures!

Umpiring has been farcical this year for all sides. Everyone hates Margetts but seriously, everything is so inconsistent and generally wrong that it's altering far too many games. Plenty of supporters around Melbs voluntarily question decisions that go their sides way... it is woeful.

Purple Voice dug up some stats on Nicholls and Margetts before one of the derbys earlier this year. No idea where from. Here is the post:
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/teams-freo-vs-west-coast.994470/page-6#post-27472579

I converted the numbers into frees per game to compare the two:

I'd like to know where Purple Voice dug up the stats from. Tried the @ thing but couldn't find their name. Season has been running for a while, so no idea how the numbers have changed since then.

EDIT: Don't know where the data came from, but now I look at it... those frees for each umpire seem a bit high. If they are for each individually then there'd probably be double or more that many frees in the game. (30-40+ for each side)

Thanks mate

The whole umpire stats started with the following post, I think I raised the Luke Farmer loves the Eagles awareness by doing so....

On the topic of umpires, there was a study done by Inside Football in June last year about the amount of free kicks given in the the comp, with some interesting results in favour of West Coast.

http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl...atersons-stadium/story-e6frf3e3-1226411746918

As per usual, no names were named. It peaked my interest, so I did my own little research. Unfortunately, stats for individual umps are hard to come by, so the best stat I could work with was free kick involvements.
Without derailing this thread and going through everything (and there were some pretty surprising results), Luke Farmer was one of the clear culprits last year.

In the games he umpired for West Coast last year, he was involved in a free kick total of 103 Frees for, and 58 against, in only 4 games, all at home.

Interestingly, after the study done in late June, Farmer did not umpire West Coast again for the remainder of the year.

To answer your questions:
* The stats were based on the 2012 season
* The FF and FA given are not for individual umpires, but for games the umpire was involved in
* The list of umpires for each game from from the Umpire Association website, the free kicks from the AFL website

So it's not really an accurate representation unfortunately, but it's all I had to work with. The FF vs FA for each game was for all three umpires combined, but was abnormally high every time Luke Farmer umpired the Eagles.

I also did it to see which umpires I wanted umpiring our games at home and away ;)

Not sure why you'd expect us to receive impartial officiating against the AFL's lovechild.

The umpiring was bad. It cost us the game
Perth Media hates us and favors West Coast.
The AFL blatantly favors every other club with fixturing, and punishes us.
Kick the bloody thing.
Andrew Demetriou manipulates the competition to fulfill his dastardly plan.
Kick the bloody thing.
The East coast media hates us, and favours every other club.

Thought that might have been the case. Thanks for clarifying.

In your post you mentioned "score involvements". I just blanked that out as it didn't seem to make much sense, but now that you mention free kick involvements it makes a lot more sense.

Nice work, and nice interpretation too. Not a scientist or engineer are you? ;)
