Maric Re-signs (now with 10% more hyphen)

I'll back a rejuvenated and fit Maric to regain the number one ruck mantle and confine Hampson back from whence he came in the VFL.
Bloke was running on 40 per cent fitness last season.
Please this

GREAT outcome IMO.

Anyone doubting the decision should read his and DR's comments.

"After a personally testing year, I took time to consider my options, but ultimately the friendships and connections I have with my teammates make Richmond my home, and where I belong," Maric said.

"I believe I am capable of playing good football at AFL level, and will continue to show guidance and leadership on and off the field."

Richmond general manager of football talent Dan Richardson said Maric still had plenty to offer on and off the field.

"We've been in discussions with Ivan for a number of weeks, and we're really pleased he's staying with us in 2017," Richardson said.

"Ivan is a fierce competitor and gives his all in every training session and game he plays, and his teammates thrive off that.

"He's also a great leader and positive role model, not just for his teammates, but everyone at the club, and we look forward to seeing more of that in 2017."

While I'm not sure he offers much from a playing perspective (hope he proves me wrong), having him as presumably a back up and full time VFL playing coach is a definite win. Sets high standards around the club for the younger players to follow, is a great role model for hard work and a solid professional. Very happy to see the mullet stick around another year - even better if it messes up Colonwood's plans! :D

THIS is a key for me. People have, can and will continue to debate the merits of Hampson's season. Was it good? Was it average (well equal 12th in the club b&f in a poor season hardly speaks volumes)? Is that all he has? Can he back up an improved season (albeit off a low base)?
What's not debatable is we play good - and times inspired - football with Maric leading the ruck division. As Richradson points out he is a "fierce competitor" and "teammates thrive off that". I've seen him lift us as a team. Looking on this season, Hampson may have been better than in the past, but he certainly didn't inspire teammates with his deeds and players don't exactly thrive off him. I can think of one single instance where Hampson's teammates got around him and that was his goal against Geelong. For the rest, he went about his business of collecting hit outs and contributing not much else without any real impact on the playing group or the team's fortunes. It's an ASSUMPTION but I'd almost guarantee teammates respond 200% better to Maric and what he does than they do to Hammer. One is a leader - the other not. And let's face it, in a club devoid of real leadership outside two regular senior players, neither of whom is captain, Ivan's leadership is like gold! Maric staying on is a reflection of where we are in terms of leaders at our club.

Quoting Dan Richardson??? :drunk:

Most athletes back themselves in even when the evidence points to the opposite.

'Truck' is early in his development as coach, generally well regarded around the league and is also further his education by studying a Masters degree in sports coaching, which is the way the AFL his going - leaning towards people with a teaching/education focus.
A Tigers player I spoke to earlier this year couldn't have spoken more highly of him, volunteering his opinion. I didn't ask. Seemed like a good validation to me. As a younger member of the coaching panel he has a greater chance of surviving what has been a generally disappointing performance by our coaching panel.
As a sidebar, Rutten was the first recipient of the Phil Walsh memorial scholarship earlier this season - awarded by the AFL Coaches association to further his development. They could have chose dozens of coaches, a panel chose him, so he's highly regarded outside "our four walls" too.
I'll back Rutten to prosper despite Hardwick.
Great response Goldy. Good to actually get some insight into Truck as well.

Well he's hardly going to come out and say he's cooked! :p

Sorry for the intrusion Tiges but The Big Ivan has always been a favorite of mine.

To me he is very much the talisman of your side, when he is up and about kicking goals and taking contested marks around the ground you seem a 20% better side at least. That first year he got traded to the Tiges he was close to AA from memory?

But when I saw him in action a few times this year he reminded me of our ageing ruckman (Big Boy McEnvoy) in that the speed of the game has gone past his ability to keep up.

Was he injured this year or was it just a case of age catching up (seems to catch up to the big fellas quicker than the midfielders, maybe cause they cant run as fast!).

You should have gone for Ivan. He will probably get more games overall than Vickery!

Like this. As a few others have touched on aside from his leadership around the club it tells me we're going to look at drafting a ruck and let ivy be a key in developing them

Happy for him to still be on the list, as long as it doesn't stop us recruiting someone like Nankervis
After Hampson, we'd only have Chol & Soldo as backups once Vickery leaves, Griffiths can pinch hit in there, but the cupboard is pretty bare otherwise

Maric has to continue playing so the NAB Mini Legends ad stays relevant.

There's never been a more obsolete medal than the Brownlow tipping comp 2016 :drunk:
