pretty slow news week

and just putting up a topic for discussion

Maybe putting Austin in the forward i believe he is a great contested mark and can kick which are all good signs of a forward and since now our forward line is now uncertain in terms of who plays where. Is it worth a try??
 
I think our forward line structure will depend on a few things, the failure or success in landing Bradshaw, coupled with how Waite returns, in terms of mobility, and Ratten's decision as to where he will play him and who we draft with pick 12. I think that there maybe a few surprises come next season. I also thought Russel's end to the season in the backline was super impressive and it would be a shame to see him be forced out of there, so it leaves us with a few options down back. I guess we'll have to wait and see but Austin's preseason and NAB Cup will tell us more...exciting times!
 
Here is hoping that Austin can come good as a forward to cover Waite if he remains injured for round 1 though I think he should be good. I am not certain but i believe he is older than Henderson? more developed too, if so he could pair with him and possibly Setanta to form our early forard line
 
Natural defender. I see him as out future CHB - only thing stopping him playing 22 games this year was injury. Big bodied stopper. Should be a very good player for us.

I think he's too well tailored for a defensive position to play him up forward - we'd be robbing Peter far too much to pay Paul.

Could possibly turn into our "swingman", having been pretty good down back, and up forward. Standing at 193cm, he does have very similar stats to Waite, in terms of his height and weight. With another preseason under his belt, I think we could expect to see him play quite a bit more AFL footy next year.
 
needs to get bigger and stronger. Knows how to use it but hasn't got it to use. He needs to learn how to anticipate leeds and work harder at staying with his man on leeds. Needs a good preseason.
 
Having watched him closely at the Bullants. I would love to see Mark Austin played up forward. He just seems natural there. He can take a beautiful contested mark, and has a good kick. Once he gets a bit stronger he will be able to do that regularly at AFL level. Would be a shame to see that ability under-utilised in the back line.
 
Quite clearly he is a natural defender. He can spoil with both fists and will work on his tank over the pre season so he can go with the likes of Riewoldt and Brown. So Defender for mine.
 
Aussie is a player very much in the mould of a swing-man.

There's no doubt that his best position is as a defender but he has shown promise as a forward as well.

He is still very young so doesn't have the body to play on the big forwards just yet so I'd like to see him spend time at both ends of the ground.

I've got a feeling that Aussie will be a huge improver next season and will spend most of the year in the seniors. As for the position that he's likely to spend most of his time in, well, who knows - and I suspect that whether or not we manage to get Bradshaw to the CFC in 2010. The more I think about it the more convinced I am that the MC will try to keep Waite primarily as a defender. That means Aussie may well be called on to play up forward and form a partnership with Henderson throughout the season.

In modern football it's becoming more and more of a necessity to be able to play in a number of positions. With Waite, Henderson and Austin we have 3 guys that are able to play in key position posts at either end of the ground which is an extremely valuable commodity to have. It allows a hell of a lot of flexibility on game day and changes in structure if things just aren't working for us - swing players around and force the opposition to make changes that they may not want to make.

As I said earlier, I think a lot depends on whether or not we get Bradshaw. If we miss out on him, guys like Austin and Henderson are placed on far more pressure and it's up to them to respond positively to it. Regardless, I'd like to see Aussie spend time up forward - he knows how to use his big frame but at this stage in his development he's not big enough for a key defender. That's not the case for a key forward, though....
 
I've been on this one for a year or so.

He was tried there last year vs Doggies for a quarter and got invovled in the play a couple of times.....IIRC helped set up a Hartlett goal?

Showed vs Pies this year he can get forward and find the goal when required.

I'd love to see him coming out of the square with Hendo at CHF in years to come.

Might depend a bit on who we take with pick 12 as well.

In our case Peter has much much more money than Paul so robbing Peter to pay Paul to make sure they both have equal amounts makes sense IMO

We can't all expect whoever we draft to immediately come onto the scene and dominate. Especially if he's KPP. Just look at Watts. Going to be awesome but first year was nothing special.
 
should be our CHB, but needs to hit the gym now and not get out until round 1.

I hope he plays a full 22 games next year,will be great for his confidence as his been in the club for a while now.

We done pretty poor in the big men department and we need a few to stand up and i hope Austin one of them.
