I know this is highly unlikely due to his media commitments and new role with sa great, but i would love to see Mark Bickley as our final assistant coach!

He was probably our best ever captain, but this isnt the reason i want him as our assistant, he was the best in and under performer we had, he was constantly at the bottom of packs dishing out the ball. Also he had some mongrel in him that he may be able to pass onto our younger midfielders at the moment, the reason we lose to many close games is the fact that we get pushed around and the other theams have those two or three mongrel players who dont take no for an answer, we dont have this we have one in riccuito and we dont have any one that is willing to start a melee or cop a punch in the mouth! honestly of our midfeilders in reilly, burton, mcleod, goodwin, edwards, bode and doughty none of them would get in there to back up a team mate ala Bicks!

I think many people on this board underrate Bicks, he was pivotal in our best years, 1993 he averaged over 20 possesions, 1997/98 blighty used him in a more unusual way of a back pocket/ rotating tagger and then ayres released him in the midfield and he really added grunt to our midfield, something he could teach our boys! Everyone gets off on Jarman and now possibly Carey as an assistant but what about Bicks, he would be perfect! in and under midfielder with that bit of grunt! plus we woudlnt have to listen to him reading the votes at the B n F!!

Clearly underrated as a midfield man.

Could teach our boys a fair bit about playing inside and going hard at it rather than standing around Ricciuto like seagulls waiting to be thrown a chip.

It's a shame that Channel 9 snapped him up first.

ahhh......misguided thought.

Not at all.

Sure people on this board rate/d him highly as a footballer - he was our captain for heaven's sake. I think the point RD was making was that people underrated his ability and performance as an out and out midfielder, rather than a flanker/defender.

When people spoke of our midfield they'd usually rattle off the names of Ricciuto, McLeod, Goodwin, Edwards, (Johnson), (Stenglein) and even Bode and Burton before coming to Bicks, if at all.

Ah riiight. well I, as well as others, have always rated Bicks higher then many other Crows players, and have made posts relating to that issue, even certain ones about his coaching aspects. So to me, this is old news.

This is exactly what i meant, that people rate him as a player/captain but the man dominated as an out and out midfielder as well and our young midfielders could learn a lot from him. I didnt say all people didnt rate him i said many peeple underrate him and i still think they do but thats just my opinion and thats what this board is for... for peoples opinions ;)

We are stuck with Neil Craig at the moment :(

At the moment we have nothing to lose for coaching experience, and Neil Craig just doesn't fit in..

I would like to see the club give Mark Bickley, Nigel Smart, or Shaun Rehn a coaching role with the club.

Just like John Worsfeild that coaching West Coast who make the finals every year.

Personally id take Bode off the list of guys who wouldnt jump in. Considering how small the fella is he actually tackles bloody well and will jump in at the hint of a scuffle. Noticed that a few on the board dont rate bodey, always been a huge wrap for him myself, but ive been watching few games from the last couple years on Fox Footy, and he is one guy who never takes his body off the line and is always getting the hard ball. Suprisingly in a year where we struggle to find guys to get the hard ball out, other than Roo and Stiffy, he cant get a game. Im not convinced either that his disposal is that much worse than alot of other guys getting a game.
Its been a pretty quick transition from a team that has pushed other sides around physicaly (within the rules i mean, crows have never been a side that starts melees, ala essendon), to a side that gets knocked out of the way to often without a response.
Marty Mattner is another who already is a tough nut as far as his ferocious tackling (wonder which star he will break next year with harvey and crawf already down), but does lack that mongrel we need at the moment.
Once Hudson starts getting more of a game, well prolly see a bit more agro and biff from the side, as i get the impression he loves that stuff.

FINALLY, someone that sees Bode in the same light as I do :D.

I don't understand how people can get stuck into Bodey so much when he has been a victim of poor man managment in the last 2 years. I expect Bodey to come out under Craig next year and return to his 2002 form when he was one of our best players for the year.

i agree with you on the tackling and throwing is body in totally but what im talking about is being a prick on the field, an enforcer like Carr and Hardwick were at port, the Johnsons at essendon... someone along those lines ;)

Good post - always rated Bicks - He'd be invaluable at the club.....only thing is - you can't teach midfielders to go in and get the ball....skills yes...guts no - but I'd still have him on board - a lot of the younger ones still hold him in awe just 'cos of his workrate and commitment.....bring him on !

I know this may sound like a huge call but if Mathew Bode can have a good pre season and find his way into the starting 18 round one next season he could walk away with the gold jacket or at least make top 3.

Gary Ayres (yes remember him) messed with his confidence and form but under Craig, Mathew Bode will develop into a quality young mid fielder that we crave.

I rate Mathew Bode

thanks!

yes unfortunately it was just a hypothetical though, no way we will lure him away from lucrative media contracts and is role with SA great though! shame he couldve been a real asset i think!

This is the most disappointing and frustrating aspect of the Crows IMO. A perfect example was the Doughty/ Farmer incident, not one Crows player ran into remonstrate. Until we get that closeness as a team where you want to stick up for your mates we will be nowhere near a top 4 side.

However, I think we are starting to get a few more players into the side who show that they have a bit of grunt, ie Watts, Thompson, Stiffy, Hudson, Jericho ( :D ), Roo.

Bring back Bicks.

Thug. Could teach the youngsters how to raise the elbow to unsespecting players and tell the older players they can play well past their use by date, just like thug Bickley did. Sign him up Cows, he can add to your mediocre group of loser coaches, who will no doubt hold the club back for many more years in football wilderness.
