There is no doubting Mark Cosgrove is going to be a terrific cricketer and will probably play for Australia .... but I was watching him playing for the Redbacks today against the Bulls. I don't know if it is the red clothing but he looks as though you could screen a movie on his backside, he's huge.

Surely somebody from the SACA or Cricket Australia can get a hold of him and work on his fitness. For a young man, he's carrying far too much weight.

He plays for Northern Districts in the SACA Grade competition, as does Mark Higgs and Darren Lehmann. What the hell is that club feeding their players??!!!!

I was thinking the same thing. He really does look rather fat.

Your right. There has never been a successful overweight cricketer.

Merv Hughes
Darren Lehman
David Boon
Colin Cowdrey
WG Grace
Shane Warne???

No one is saying there havent been overweight crcikets which have been successful

however if he wants to make the Aussie side and play at his best domesticly wouldnt it be better if he was at his fittest state possible?

No, no ... you're right. Let's start turning our cricketers into fatties, it's obviously the way to go.

Lets not, lets let the cricketers play cricket the way they want to.

Yeah fitness has nothing to do with success as a sportsman

I haven't seen such an overweight figure play Australian domestic cricket since Merv Hughes in his final couple of seasons with the ACT.

But Merv's career was over by then and Cosgrove's is just starting, the main concern is that someone so young could be so overweight. To have someone so young so overweight is a big concern.

Exactly. Cossie's been like that at least since he was 7. Not everyone has a Brett Lee body, and not everyone needs a Brett Lee body. The Cricket Academy and SACA fitness coaches know what they're doing and if it was a problem would've done something about it.

Its like telling adam gilchrist not to hit boundaries. He's gonna do what he wants to do.

His running between the wickets today was just dire.

I remember at the time the television commentators going on about Shane Warne's big slim down over the winter of 1992. Cosgrove, currently at a similar point in his career, needs to do the same.

Yeah I agree. He's too fat. I think it might have something to do with how much grog he has had.

Just for the record, I am not bagging Cosgrove. He is a real talent and I am hoping he plays 100 tests for Australia. The point of this thread is to hope he elevates himself to peak fitness so he can realise his full potential.

In today's professional cricket there is no room for players who are not in the best possible physical condition. It only stands to reason that the fitter a player is, the better he will perform.
