Just heard on SEN that he is several weeks away again due to hamstring problems. Happened at training

Also heard this. "Hamstring soreness" according to the club.

O.P, 2 knee reco's and now shocking soft tissue injuries. This guy just can't catch a break.

I wouldn't be suprised if he retires at the end of the year if he can't get his body right. Poor bloke :(

I think players coming back from knee surgery generally have hami problems in the first year can't see him giving up now after this length of time because of soft tissue injuries

I've never heard of it happening this much to anyone who's had a reco. They should send him to that German guy the cats sent Rooke to. Or the bloke in Donald with the magic hands. It's bloody tragic. Next to Richo, Cogs has been my favourite player ever since 2002. Still remember him winning 12 clearances at AAMI Stadium towards the end of that season, as a 20-year-old. Now, like so many of us, his 20s look like being wasted. Let's hope not. F*#k the expense, send him to Germany!!

..not looking good after his latest hamstring setback, it's the psychological impact that will be greatest challenge. Out for a few weeks ut hope he sticks with it. :thumbsu:

mark coughlan will return this year
his hamstrings arent yet built to cope with the extra pressure being strained upon them after the two knee recos, although unlikely to make a comeback to the afl this year im sure he will get some very well deserved fitness in the VFL.
his attacking style at the ball and the man is too much for richmond to lose and whispers are telling people that terry is willing to give coughlan another year to regain his confidence and game back
as said above confidence and the physchological side will be a main factor in how well he returns from injury
personally i think he could do our senior list wonders by returning
foley coughlan deledio simmonds ?
very nice : )

Mark Coughlan out with hamstring injury

A THIRD consecutive season is on the brink for haunted Richmond midfielder Mark Coughlan after a training mishap yesterday. Coughlan, 26, fighting back after two knee reconstructions, tore a hamstring near the end of a solid match-practice workout at Punt Rd.

The 2003 best-and-fairest winner, who missed the 2006 and 2007 seasons because of knee operations, was planning to step up his comeback with VFL affiliate Coburg against Geelong in the early game at the MCG on Saturday.

A hamstring injury after a NAB Cup game delayed his return and he finally eased back by playing two quarters for Coburg last weekend.

Coughlan had survived several heavy tackles during the simulated match workout yesterday and he ran at full pace.

When the players took a short drinks break, even some of the Tigers' assistant coaches didn't notice Coughlan walk off with forward Nathan Brown, who is still feeling discomfort from a recent stomach upset.

A medical scan today will reveal the damage to Coughlan's hamstring, but the club expects him to "miss several weeks" before he can start the long haul back again.

Leading sports medico Dr Peter Larkins last night said the pattern would be of "great concern" if this is a recurring hamstring on the same leg.

"Traditionally, they keep causing trouble and it's more of a concern for the rehab program because you need to spend more time out each time it happens," he said.

The latest setback was a bitter disappointment for coach Terry Wallace, who had been relieved no one was injured during the 15 minutes of match-type collisions in what was a high-class 70 minutes of training to prepare for Geelong on Saturday at the MCG.

"At the moment we've got virtually most players available. So for the sake of coming back and being hardnosed and having the right approach and attitude to taking on your games, that's the equal to taking the risk of losing someone by running the gauntlet," Wallace said after training.

Hall of Fame game participants Matthew Richardson, Nathan Foley and Troy Simmonds were given light duties.

Another solid performance by No. 2 draft pick Trent Cotchin in the VFL curtain-raiser at the MCG would enhance his chances to make his debut in the Dreamtime clash against Essendon the following Saturday night.

But Wallace is mindful of Cotchin's late start to the season. "We'll see him when he's ready to play," he said.

Re: Mark Coughlan out with hamstring injury

Just wanted to wish Coughlan all the best and hope he comes back successfully. I hate hearing talented players that get continually injured seriously like knees. At least this time it is only a hammy.
Good luck and keep perservering Mark

Re: Mark Coughlan out with hamstring injury

Can anyone confirm whether a piece of hamstring was used to repair his reconstructed knee?

If this was the case then I can imagine that this may be a chronic injury resulting from some poor medical advice

Re: Mark Coughlan out with hamstring injury

This sucks...
& the most frustrating thing is IIR that it all essentially started when he fell over in the freaking shower!!!!!!

Yeah we're at least one mature, classy midfielder off being able to match it with the best in the guts. Cogs deserves all the time he needs to get right. We need him, we love him, so hopefully our patience and his perserverance will be rewarded.
