Just heard on the radio a little rumour saying West Coast may look at drafting Mark Seaby in the pre-season draft as a back up just in case.
My initial thought was WTF!!!!!!
But on reflection if we are to make a big push this year and god forbid something happens to Nic or Cox do we really want an inexperienced young guy to come in or someone with a bit of experience, albeit not the best.
Remember no Lynch back up anymore.

Thoughts?

He won't be much good as backup if he can't get out on the park, which was the case for much of his time with the Swans. I would prefer to get games into Lycett, particularly if he is a chance of returning to S.A. at some stage as giving him some games would quell that.

Having said that, if we have room on the list and he comes in dirt cheap, it's worth looking at. I'd have to know who misses out though. I'm not sure exactly how this works...can he be rookie listed?

rookie list is only option it seems.

Yes, then elevated if need be.

We have no room on our main list anyway so the only option is to take him as a rookie*

*provided we don't delist anyone before the rookie draft.

Hasn't the window for delistings finished?

Would have to be a rookie... I think the Seaby discussion is more along the lines of if Cox and NN go down at the same time, we don't really want Lycett out there on his own. Having Seaby on the rookie list would provide mature age backup similar to what Collingwood are doing with Ben Hudson.

Ask yourself: if the worst does happen and Cox and NN do go down at the same time, who would work with Lycett in the ruck? Next tallest are McInness, Schofield and MacKenzie. Personally I'd pick Schofield given the AFL's proud tradition of strangely hairy ruckmen.

He can be rookie listed. With Seaby i would say he would only come in if there is a LTI to either Cox or Nic Nat , if round 1 comes along and Nic Nat isn't ready i think Cox will just play Ruck most of the time and we will bring in Lycett to help him out when Cox needs a rest.

If things go to plan we will have our forward line up and running and will not require Cox to play forward for that match. And the good thing is we have a pretty soft draw after the Freo match so we can ease Nic Nat in to build his fitness back up. On the news he said he can not start training for another 8-9 weeks so that brings us up to the first week of Feb and that give him 7 weeks to get match fit for round 1.

At first i was pretty Meh about West Coast considering Seaby but its good to have him as back up as teams like Pies, Hawks and Geelong seem to do it all the time by bring in experience as a backup.

For the NAB cup we need to have Lycett play main ruck for all games and see how he goes! exciting times ahead

I posted this days ago. Gezz the media is slow these days.

Has any team who has lost their primary ruckman (or ruckmen) to injury for the season ended up winning a GF, anyway? I think if both are out for more than 1 or 2 games we're out of the running regardless of our backup.

But I suppose if NN had an injury, another backup would make sense to support Cox, given that we probably don't want him to ruck full time.

Are there any other positions we're missing depth in though? I feel like a backup KPD might be of more use to us at this point, if there are any to be had.

I get the feeling that Cox and NN were asked to play thpough injuries and a beak against the obviously week teams would help them greatly. Thus a cheap back up looks a good investment. But who is a different matter?

For the season? Probably not. 8 weeks however, may be a different story, and given the Eagles tend to rotate rucks a lot more than other teams it might make sense to have one on hand just in case Lycett can't cut it.

Didn't Mumford miss a fair bit of last year? I think approx 8 weeks.

don't know if that sort of draft thinking is really what we need. i'd much rather get games into lycett if we lose either nicnat or cox.

if they both go down for an extended period we'd probably have to concede that our premiership chances are blown regardless of who comes into the side.

anyway, the club may have completely different views on it all and given the lack of real success we've had with rookie picks maybe they believe it's a better use of list space.

are there any other mature ruckmen available? can't help thinking there must be a better option than seaby out there?!
