The hard-working and dedicated veteran late in his career was virtually unrecognisable from the lazy performer whose weight balooned way beyond a reasonable level in his early days at Sydney and Brisbane.
He originally came from Sydney club St George and played his early football at full-back. Many people wondered why North bothered recruiting him and when he hurt his knee in his first game things looked even worse. But he would end up giving tremendous service to the club and earned respect as a clubman and clever forward who had a good football brain.
A member of the Roo 1996 premiership side, ironically, against his original AFL club.

KANGAROOS premiership utility Mark Roberts - credited with the fastest knee reconstruction in AFL history - says Nathan Thompson may live with "a lifetime of regrets" if he doesn't test his knee this year.
While Roos coach Dean Laidley said on Thursday he was unlikely to risk Thompson, Roberts said the Kangaroos should at least consider playing him as a deep forward.
Roberts had a second reconstruction on his knee in Round 10, 1994, but amazingly returned to play reserves 13 weeks later in Round 22, before a senior preliminary final return.

As we enter round four, let's stop for a minute and look back 10 years — to round four, 1987, when the almost new Brisbane Bears played their first home game for premiership points.
The match was at Carrara, on Queensland's Gold Coast, and the opponent was Fitzroy, which had been successful in its first three games. A crowd of 22,512 watched the historic match, which Fitzroy
won by 16 points.
The only remaining AFL player from the Brisbane line-up is Mark Roberts, who was chosen at full-back. Roberts is expected to
be at the Gabba playing with North in today's game.
Howdy people,
Just been having a look at all the old grand finals as of late ....and then i came across the 1998 Grand final when we were beaten by the Crow eaters.
Now I was there that day as many of us would have been, but one thing i didnt really take notice of on the day was the fact that Mark Roberts didnt take the field after half time!!
Now in my opinion the FRIDGE was B.O.G up until he did his hammy.....and North were looking very sharp, especially Winston in the 1st Quarter.
It was kind of the same this year for the Brisbane boys when Martin Pike was absolutely dominating up until he got injured and didnt play any further part in the match....but you see there reward was that they won the flag and we didnt.
So my Question to you people is ``Do you think that Mark Roberts not playing any further part in the 98 grand final have any effect on the teams spirits or is it just something that will never be answered?
Kangaroos AFL premiership players David King and Mark Roberts were each given a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $2000 to charity yesterday for their "cowardly" and "stupid" assault of a fast-food vendor last year.
Father of two Bulent Coskun suffered bruising to the face, cuts to the hand, ear, and jaw and back soreness after King, Roberts and Darren Postlethwaite, assaulted him at a kebab stall on Flemington Road, North Melbourne, in May.
The players originally denied that King was involved in the assault. But in the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday, King, 30, Roberts, 36, and Postlethwaite, 32 - all of North Melbourne - pleaded guilty to assault in company.
The court heard the trio abused Mr Coskun, 24, for being too slow and that the "shit kebabs" he served were too expensive. Sergeant Rod Hardy, prosecuting, said one man took a sausage from the warmer, wanting the sausage free. When Mr Coskun asked for the sausage to be purchased or returned, a scuffle ensued.
