It’s time the coaching staff give Marty some attacking roles, and enough with playing him across half-back! I’d like Marty to be given the chance to attack and create. Maybe starting him at half-forward.

Marty should be dropped and shouldn't be in our 22 this season.

I was a big fan of him coming back but with Jono and Krak about to come back, he has been that poor that he should be dropped. Give him another pre season and see how he goes next season. There is no way I can see him playing an attacking role. He has been put up forward and he has done terribly.

Marty will be a solid player but it was always a big ask expecting him to be as good as he was before he left when he has been out of the game for two years.

Marty's best role seems to be as a defensive stopper/tagger on slower midfield types and slower small forwards.

The two games he's been most effective in this year are ANZAC day where he held Stanton for most of the match, and against Sydney two weeks ago when he restricted McGlynn for most of the night.

I think he's in our best 25, but whether he plays in the finals or not might depend on whether there's a matchup for him or not.

Fantastic return by Marty.

2 years out of the game and in his first year back he plays 15 games.
Another pre-season and a bit more touch and he will be back to his pre-leaving form.

Brilliant recruiting again by Hine

He is to slow. Really stands out. He is not productive at all in that running defender role. Doesn't get any where near enough of the ball, and his lack of pace means he is always under pressure when disposing of it.

Fact is, I don't think he is in our best 22. Good depth player, and maybe could be good as a tagger/run with role on the slower running midfielders, but thats about it.

Tad overrated on these boards if you ask me.

Send him packing back to Ireland to the potato farm.
Why did he bother coming back .He is the shadow of the player he used to bwe before he left.

Marty go home to ireland.

Is there anyone you don't want to get rid of?

He needs to increase his speed and touch over the preseason.. next year he should be a far better season.

I think he is a Simon Buckley fan

Speaking of S Buckley, I read Luke Mason describe a passage of play in the VFL that involved Buckley courageously running back with the flight of the ball. Surely he had the wrong player?

Yeah, I'm guessing him got him confused with K Pendlebury, they are similar in appearance.;)
Simon doesn't appear to be all that brave

Yeah absolutely spot on:thumbsu: I do think he has a chance for a 22 next year though ... it's pretty impressive his return and he admits even in the short time he has been away just how quickly the game has sped up. He'll be right.

For me if he is playing inside duties it's a tagging/stopping role. Outside duties on the wing. He has a massive tank, clever kick and a long boot ... and he's certainly not a dumb player either and needs to step up and show he is creative. If his run and bounce becomes 2nd nature and uses it when needed (say on on the wing) to make up an extra 15 or so + 50 metre kick it would be enormous bonus. Ideally I guess he needs to be running up and down all the time IMO rather than a defense role in the back half. Just needs another preseason.

Some might be tempted to say..

We only want real supporters at Collingwood.

I support Collingwood and the players chosen to represent us with out question.
Not all players are like Beams or Maxwell, and even though I point out they have some flaws in their game I would never threaten to turn away from the Club because those particular players are kept on.

To me "Side by Side" is more than words, however I fully accept that some of our supporters are very shallow people and threaten all kinds of stupidity if they don't get their own way.
Hell I recently read a thread where a "supporter" said they would stop supporting Collingwood if Cloke stayed on next year.
Have you ever heard anything more juvenile?

Marty has met expectations, anybody expecting him to play a leading role and finish top 10 in the BnF was delusional.

What we picked up was a solid player who has given good service in a number of roles.

He will benefit greatly from another pre-season, more in terms of game structures instead of fitness as he is a fitness freak already.

Should be used in a high half forward type role, similar to that of Sidebottom and Didak, as he has a great motor and neat skills.

Surely you're joking. When Marty is at his best (and I believe he can still get back to it) he is a fantastic player.

Don't forget that the pick we used for Marty also secured us Elliott who has shown great promise.

I think both these guys will be best 22 next season so it was a great trade in reality

I'd like to see Marty play on a wing. His running ability is elite and with his long kicking he should be used as a weapon and can be a much more damaging player with this increased opportunity to find the ball.

Down back defensively Marty has at times been exposed 1v1 while through the midfield he can run with anyone as he showed earlier in the season v Stanton when he was still productive which is the attraction because it gives him the opportunity to be a much more effective two way player than he is at present.

....Now read this response and think of Harry O'brien.........fits like a glove.
