Bushrangers, Kings,
When we played you earlier in the year at Crow Park in the wet and greasy conditions Kris Massie was being hailed as a superstar defender for holding Buddy

I couldnt believe what i was hearing or reading. It would of been like Jon Hassall holding the Modra goaless in the mid 90's.

Anyway to see Massie again line -up on him last week i couldnt believe my eyes.

I think Craig has a bit to answer for with some of his match ups. Massie was never going to get near Buddy in dry conditions? As the Duck said Buddy had chances to kick another 4 or 5 on the weekend if he had of held chest marks.

Anyways thanks for a cracker of a game and well played to the Roo who over his career had touched Hawthorn up numerous times.

Perhaps next time we play Neil Craig my pay Buddy some more attention and planning. See you in 08.

Gee, good thing you brought this up. We hadn't mentioned that match up at all on this forum since Saturday.

By the way, your username is tops. :thumbsu:

I'd still like to hear people say why Stevens and Bock would have done a better job. All Franklin's marks were just leading up. He wasn't pulling down the big contested marks.

The problem was that we didn't have one of Stevens/Mattner/Basset standing in front of those leads and cutting him off.

They might not have...but wasn't it worth a try, at least??

Exactly. Who knows what might have happened if Bock went on him? If Craig at least tried then we could comfortably say, ok we didn't have anyone good enough for Franklin on the day. But now, we're all just left wondering..

After 4 or 5 goals surely Craig should have given someone else a crack at franklin? or at least peel players of their man to get in buddys way..

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner!

I mean honestly Stevens and Bock are slower then Massie, they were not going to be able to keep up with Buddy on a lead (However having Mattner on him would have been interesting ...)

franklin kicked a lot of goals from long distances. our traditional 'peel off' defenders (ie bassett/stevens) operate 20m-30m from goal.
franklin led way up the ground to thwart our 'peel off' players...good tactic to unravel one of the keys to our defence.

THIS IS TRUE. although we didn't have to go with the "traditional" peel off tactic there are always more creative methods to counteract a quick tall forward on the lead.

Thought about the Mattner one myself. No one was surprised when he was dropped, and he hadn't done anything the weeks leading up, but I still thought he should have been in the side. Probably would of been put to the sword like any of our defenders but would have had the pace, was tall enough if Massie played on him. Mind you McGregor kicked three so was probably a fair move.

Thought Massie should have been moved of him pretty early but I'm surprised he didn't spoil him more often. He got some good spoils in Massie, but Franklin marks the ball very late and doesn't go close to completing the mark until it is behind or over his head, not out in front. We just needed someone who could have stuck with him and then punched the ball away as he was marking, which was possible as he wasn't marking out in front.

Ah, I just wish he kicked 2.11 like a few weeks before.

At one stage in the game stevens was on Buddy and got beaten easily on the lead. The passes from the Hawthorn midfield were superb and had no pressure applied to them from our midfield.

I think with this annology has given the club your identity.

Come back Fred who ever you are!!!!:D

cheers...i think ;)

looks like big brother is working over time :D

there is always something about Glenelg boys, and not many of them, maybe Ecky can help us unraval this bigfooty mystery (i really want to put the :ninja: code in here but bigfooty doesn't have it :( )

Once again the unaccountability of our midfielders has cost us dearly.
FFS was anyone playing on Crawford at all? What about Young or Hodge?

Massie was soundly beaten by a guy in a much bigger size & weight division but it makes it a helluva lot easier for the forward when he's getting lace-out delivery from the midfield.

Thompson and Edwards get 25-30 possessions every week but they are terrible by foot and are responsible for more clangers/turnovers than the rest of the team combined, meanwhile their opponents get similar possessions but are far more damaging with them.

If they are not going to be accountable for their opponent then they need to make their possessions count more as those turnovers really really hurt.
