To be honest, I was using the expression 'jack-the-lad' not in regards to Jack Darling, but rather to Masten.
I agree that you cannot expect young men to live like monks. (aside: I've always thought this a weird expression given the history of monks in the making of [great] booze).
I do think the number of incidents is relevant. If the AFL is going to suspend people for damaging their brand (aka bringing the game into disrepute) for getting in the news for the wrong reasons, then that matters.
West Coast aren't only in the business of winning football games. They're, err, in business. It would be dire for the club (sponsorship and AFL-wise) if another player took the express train to a town called 'Off-field-Cuzzy-06'.
Pardon. I thought the term Jack-the-lad was referring to JD's his high school sexcapade.
If the AFL took the tack of taking action against Masten for damaging their brand, without just cause, Masten's lawyers would have the AFL in court pretty fast.
Just cause isn't the number of incidents he's involved in. Wrong doing has to accompany this for there to be any basis to the claim.
You don't have to tell me that WC is a business. One only has to read my opinion on this in other threads, where treating players as a commodity comes up for discussion.
Masten isn't showing signs of heading down the same street as Cousins.
If the club were to side with the sponsors in wanting someone like Masten out, there had better be just justification, otherwise Masten's lawyers would come in hard and have a field day.
