gee
i need foxtel........but anyway, what was hawkins like?? were his contested marks (big, easy, tough, cheap??)!
and nablett.........how was he, well, how bout a general match report!!!
haha thanks everyone

Tom Hawkins kicked three. Took a couple of nice grabs in the first half, but missed his shots on goal. He got a few somewhat cheaper touches in the second half and drilled them. That sounds harsher than it should because he had a good debut. Perfect compliment to Mooney and NAblett, who bagged five each.

I watched it and I could not pick one weak link out of the whole side. The midfield was brilliant, the backline dominated and the forwardline finally came together.

Forwardline: N.Ablett looked fantastic tonight. His speed off the mark was brilliant and his hands were very good, looked great at ground level too. Mooney did very well again and provided a great supporting role for N.Ablett. Hawkins kicked 3.2 and looked great on debut. I think the last assessment of him was way off, the marks he took were strong, in the hands marks against Whitnall, an AA CHB. The goals he kicked were all pretty much from the 50m mark on an angle and his speed off the mark out did even Ablett. Varcoe showed some great toe and provided great support with Chappy and Gaz in the midfield.

Midfield: Nothing to say but brilliant. Bartel, Corey, Chapman, Ling, Ablett, Enright, even Blake was really good, and Ottens dominated the ruck work and his legs around the ground were impressive. But the best was Wojcinski. Wojcinski's speed from a standing start was a highlight and he just broke lines with ease, which gave the rest of the team the confidence to do the same. May be a different story against say a Sydney, but it was exciting football.

Backline: Geelong backline of old. Took all the marks on the fifty with Scarlett, Milburn and Egan doing some great work, while Hunt was back to 2004 form with his rebound work.

In conclusion, things looked great, Varcoe, Hawkins and Selwood were impressive, but it was Carlton, so I would like to see us play like that again against West Coast or Sydney.

Votes:
5. D.Wojcinski
4. J.Bartel
3. D.Milburn
2. J.Corey
1. N.Ablett

So many others could have got in, and if another supporter did this there could be 5 different players in there.

Look, get a copy of this game and watch it, it was that good. Yes, a few poor decisions that got punished, but tonight showed how we can play and the talent we have. Great stuff for the future.

Great game by the boys, best they've played for a year or so.
Hawkins showed plenty IMO. I liked the way he wanted to have a shot for goal ( like a real forward should) Knows how and were to lead is a long accurate kick and needs to be played from now on.

Varcoe is very exciting, knows were the goals are.will get better when he learns how to get to the right positions, that will come with game time.

Sellwood is still getting to grips with the pace of the game but has a touch of class and a good footy brain.

All the N.Ablett knockers should pray for forgiveness.
He's not going to snag 5 every week but will be a very good player for a long time.Has v.good vision knows were the goals are and gaining confidence every game he plays.

Byrnes had the chance to grab a spot for himself and fluffed it badly,Cannot kick and is well behind Stokes IMO.

LET'S NOT FORGET WE BEAT THE WOODEN SPOONERS!!!

The young bloods inspired the rest. You would not recognize it as the same lame bunch that ran around BEHIND the Bulldogs. Tonight they ran the ball, had loose men, looked really switched on - better than most of last year! Mustn't get ahead of ourselves but it was Geelong giving someone else a footy lesson for once.
Lingy was ok - only the odd clanger. Charlie looked flat-footed and will be fighting for his place. Blake and Ottens seemed to team well - didn't miss King - and if he'll only return for cameo roles, what's the point? Scarlett, Egan, Enright were confident and assured. (God Whitnall is a useless unit!)
Should not have allowed Carlton back into the game in the last quarter - we enjoyed the dumb silence of the Blues supporters behind us. I think we'll call this game the benchmark and not accept anything less.:thumbsu:

Even Hawkins got a bit carried away. What a debut. See how excited he was to snare it from the Right half forward pocket about 50 out? Curved back brilliantly.

Hawkins will only get the kudos he deserves from the media with 8+ contested marks and 3 goals, 2. This Kid is the future Power forward of the competition.

Pretty sensible post and yeah there were some great positives but I like the balanced way you ended it. Please lets not get carried away by this.

It is exciting when you know you have got some talented kids coming through so I am looking forward to next week as a result....

They did get to implement the new game plan...as opposed to last week where we tried and werent able to. The changes made to the forward line in particular had an immediate impact when Ottens went into the ruck. We ran the ball well from defense...because we were allowed to on the night...the doggies hardly gave us a sniff. We ran the game out well again.

It will all be great news if we continue to play with the same purpose against some real opposition starting next week against the Demons.

If we dont well then its all back to square one and the mental fragility of last season.

Oh and two guys you wont hear much about this week because they both genuinely played well were Ling and Gardiner...good efforts from both.
