Swans v Falcons - after being given a belting in round 1, what will the Swans mood be like? They have since worked their way into second spot, by percentage, but WP are now hanging tenuously in the 4. A loss here and a probable Sharks victory will see them leapfrog the Falcons.

Swans come into this game on the back of some fighting victories over Claremont and East Perth and a spanking of Peel, so confidence should be high. Hansen has been on fire, if his hip problem is OK then he's hard to stop. Notte has been working into some good form forward and provides a dangerous double pronged attack, whilst Geappen hasn't reached the dizzying performances of last year. That's probably because A Krakouer has stepped in and stepped up and Thomas Roach has been sensational. Twomey is gradually finding his best form and Ames has been the general down back with whoever ably supporting him. Roberts and Spaanders have been super in the middle, with young Garlett showing a lot of promise and Walters, Hinkley and Davis providing the occasional brilliance but consistent, solid support coming from these guys.

The Falcons have shown a great team chemistry and have dangerous players in LeCras, Tsalikis, Darling (when on song), Bewick/s, Andrews, Strijk and a solid defense with Lasscock, Hunt, Gobbels, Tedesco et al. Young Bewick has developed, van Berlo is a quality WAFL footballer when around, Guadagnin, Rice, Pearce, Crosslands are all solid contributors. Andrews rucked brilliantly against Spaanders last time and this will be a critical contest again. Should be a cracking match.

Tigers v Thunder - it was 100+ last time and it may well be again, but despite this there is a lot of young talent between the two teams.

The tiges have probably the best running brigade and depth in the business this year. Brabazon, Blackwell and Foster represented the state but there were a number of unlucky tiger cubs. Kane Mitchell continues to impress and is now a no nonsense, tough as nails, gut running HBF or mid. I remember watching him in the reserves final at the Arena a couple of years ago, after Swans come from behind win, and thought he might make something of himself then. Another revelation this season has been Ninyette, quick, agile, deadly. Then there is a host of AFL rookie listed players, like Weedon and Broome, waiting for their chance. There's the experience of the captain, Rudeforth, plus Walton, C Jones, Ruck, Franz, Derrickx etc, so a pretty good all round team. Will Wilkes remain out and will this even up the contest?

The thunder continue, rightly, to put their faith in youth. They have highly rated juniors like H Bennell, Butcher, Wilson and then others like M Brown, Luff, Mason who could have been drafted last year. These guys are all boys being asked to do a man's job, sometimes they look good (beating WP) and others they look ordinary. Battye, O'Brien and other more experienced players back and playing well only benefits the team, so which Peel will turn up to Claremont Oval on Saturday?

Royals v Sowfs - the other critical match of the round, this will possibly kill off one of the teams chances of finals action, should the Royals lose.

The Royals promised so much, have barely fired a shot and now must win this to remain in touch. They should come out firing and will, whether it's enough will depend on the peripheral players like the Noakes, Sweet, who has had an outstanding year to date, Sampey, Shepheard, Roberton, Wirra, if he suits up. The Royals have not been let down by their old stagers, Cowell, Pickering and Wulff, they have been fantastic when I have seen them. They need a lift from the other group.

Souths have been close in a number of games this year, like the Royals, but not got home in many of late. Can McGrath, Graham, Murphy, Wilson, Phillips, T Bairstow really rally the rest of the team and get them fired up? At the same time, some exciting young talent like Gugliamana, Carter, Collica have been blooded and performed well. This should be a fiery and entertaining clash.

Sharks v Demons - after a few days of rain, Shark park really will be a tough place for the Demons to visit and try to prise their first win.

The sharks are seeming to get a stable AFL player base, along with a number of talented youngsters. Dodd, Spangher, Brown, Bucovacz seem destined to play more footy for the Sharks than up the next level, this year at least. Kyanga is developing, as is Fasolo jnr, Brennan and others and if Riley Dunn gets and stays fit, they are a handfull for all other teams.

The demons are still winless, despite having what I consider a reasonable team, on paper. Armstrong, Moody, Thornton, Young, Cook, Ferguson is a good base to start. Throw in Mzungu, Billings, Bollenhagen, A Smith and there's a pretty solid core of experience, youth and talent. They will surprise a few teams before the year is out, but will it be the Sharks this week? Unlikely.

Great crowd at Basso this arvo, around 5K I would hazard a guess at. Whilst I love nothing more than beating the cardies, their supporters do bring a great atmosphere to the game. Prepared to yell and scream for their team, give the umpires some pointers on how to dress and umpire, it's all in good spirits.

First quarter and the Falcons get off to a flying start, with their defense holding Swans at bay, but only leading by a goal at quarter time.

Second quarter goes relatively similarly, with WP skipping out to more than a 3 goal lead and Swans whittling that back to 2 goals by half time. Every time Swans looked to get a run on WP would get the ball out of the centre, with their runners going hard and they would get an easy goal. Salecic has an enormous running capacity, making hard work for whoever was running with him.

Third quarter and the arm wrestle continues. WP skip out by an early goal, Swans come back, WP get another goal to keep the 2-3 goal lead. Davis starts/continues? to keep working hard for the Swans and tries to take the game on. Notte enters stage right and kicks 2 goals in a couple of minutes, 1 from the boundary under the McDonald Stand, gets Swans to less than a goal behind and the fans start going berserk. Arm wrestle for another 5 mins and then Swans snatch the lead less than a minute from the siren. Both teams look out on their feet as it's been a perfect Autumn day and a lot of ground covered by the players. I think to myself, this is going to be a tough last quarter.

Last quarter under way and the tone is set early. Takes until about the 5 min mark for Swans to get a goal and get the lead out to 9 points. WP respond very quickly, via Salecic, I think? However, Swans players that were looking to give up on the chase in the third, Garlett, Walters, Roach, Geappen, keep working and suddenly find themselves in a heap of room. Ryan Davis lead the charge for mine, took WP on through the midfield, ran really hard and delivered to his forwards or midfield mates. Notte has a couple of tough chances, which he doesn't convert, then Geappen steps in with a couple, Davis with a great running goal from a Spaander's tapdown in the centre, Colreavy is running amok across HF, Garlett and Walters keep taking the ball out of the centre and it's 8 goals 5 to 1.1 in the last and game blown open. Notte kicked the point of the year, was holding his defender off with 1 arm, the ball bounces over head high, he taps down to boot and kicks it over his head for a sublime point. All in all, great running display, by both teams, WP never gave up, just eventually ran out of steam, and the excitement of the Swans players in the win was great to see.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Good wrap up of the game also Krakouer was very influential in the last qtr too Swannies with centre clearances & i thought Jetta played a great game down back.

Do i dare mention it....

Claremont Tigers: 38.12 (240)
Peel Thunder: 7.4 (46)

Personally the biggest thumping i've seen in the WAFL, maybe even in all the Footy i've seen, Peel just struggled to move the ball and Claremont did the exact opposite, moved the ball really well which resulted in goals, speaking of goals, Chad Jones (10) goals, pretty embarrasing if you ask me but credit where its due, the Tiges are a great team, the question i'm asking is how are Peel gonna handle it??

So if Peel are so bad how is Perth going at the moment in last spot??

THe mail I get is the AFL are funding via the WA footy commission so that they stay in the WAFL just because they produce a great source of recruits. Which gives those kids some chance of making it who perhaps are less fortunate than those living in Perth.

Now, I'm not here to pick an argument WestOz, but that's a bogus argument by the WAFC or AFL. Those kids would still be produced, just come through South Freo, Swans or East Perth, not much would change.
However, Peel have beaten both Perth and West Perth, so they aren't stone, motherless last. Give them next year to keep the playing group they have and see what happens?

People should also remember that Swans, EP (until the alignment), Subi and probably every other club, have been through patches where they have been deplorable and beatable by an Amateur side.

No there is no arguement here but we have 2 teams at present that are really canon fodder for the other 7, Perth especially this year. I would of thought that perhaps these 2 could or should look at amalgamation. Or something to prop them up in the player department to make them stronger more competitive. Bagging them and saying get rid of them is not really the answer. When I was a kid Subi were the easy beats now look at them, I just wouldn't like to see some of these kids end up playing Soccer rather than come through the local WAFL ranks thats a bigger threat.

Just watching it on ABC's Highlight Reel from the previous round. Imagine what happens when Claremont take on the Dees later on in Round 17.
