such a shame he's not out there.. imagine if he was in the side now with no injuries.. we'd be a red hot go.. miss goose like crazy! was close to my favourite player.. hoping like hell he can make it back next year

yeh def agree would really free up sammy fisher a lot more but to the boys credit they have done a good job considering our backline has never been rated. just glad maxy has played the majority of the year and been magnificent. Does anyone know whats happening with goose how hes going etc?

I don't think Matt Maguire is going to get back to his pre-broken leg form at CHB. I would like to see him given a go at half-forward.

It depends on the medicos down at the Saints. If they rush him back for round 1 then they are fools. I may not be a doctor but I really think that they should give Goose as much time as possible. Forget about round 1, just aim to have him ready for the second half of the year.

If he breaks down again with the same injury then the medicos need to be sacked. Especially if they rushed him back for round 1.

You're a real wierdo.....

Actually, they rushed him back for Round 4v Geelong. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you were getting it confused with 2007 when he rushed back for Round 1 v Melbourne.

Why is that?

They rushed him back this year for round 1 and he broke down with stress fractures. Did you want the same thing to happen again Sainters66?

It would appear on the surface ( without any additonal inside information) that you may be right. The stress fractures in 2007 would seem to be a result of the weakened bones, with sudden exposure to high stress after a long period of relative inactivity. Then again in 2008.

From Wikipedia

Bones are constantly attempting to remodel and repair themselves, especially during a sport where extraordinary stress is applied to the bone. Over time, if enough stress is placed on the bone that it exhausts the capacity of the bone to remodel, a weakened site -- a stress fracture -- on the bone may appear. The fracture does not appear suddenly. It occurs from repeated traumas, none of which is sufficient to cause a sudden break, but which, when added together, overwhelm the osteoblasts that remodel the bone.
Stress fractures commonly occur in sedentary people who suddenly undertake a burst of exercise (whose bones are not used to the task). They may also occur in Olympic-class athletes who do extraordinary quantities of high-impact exercise, in professional and amateur marathon and/or distance runners who run a lot of mileage per-week or in soldiers who march long distances.
Muscle fatigue can also play a role in the occurrence of stress fractures. For every mile a runner runs, more than 110 tons of force must be absorbed by the legs. Bones are not made to stand that much energy on their own and the muscles act as shock absorbers for the excess force. But, as muscles become tired and stop absorbing most of the shock, the bones experience greater amounts of stress. Finally, when muscles (usually in the lower leg) become so fatigued that they stop absorbing any shock, all forces are transferred to the bones.
Previous stress fractures have been identified as a risk factor

You have to feel for a guy that can't get out there

It is the last year of his contract next year so I hope he can get some games under his belt and play some good footy and get an extension

If he doesn't make it back as an AFL footballer I will be devastated. Had such a bright future only to be cut down by injury. Top bloke and a gun player, at full fitness he'd be a vital asset to our team. Hope he makes a return next year (after making absolutely sure he's completely healed first of course) and plays some good footy.

Personally I still think/hope he will be AA CHB one day.

Maguire before his broken leg was a premier CHB of the comp. Wonderful player he was. Would love to see him back out on the park, especially with what i'm hearing about Maxie.

Stranded on 99 matches. I thought he signed a three deal at the end of 2007. Apparently there was interest from Hawthron (Possibly a bad rumour). So is Magure contracted for 2009, as well as 2010? If thats the case, i really do hope he gets back next year, otherwise things could turn out nasty (contract payout).

The Punter makes a very good point. Maybe Half Forward is the way to go for the future. It was really sad to see him in 2008 (Pre Injury) just playing nowhere near his 2004-06 form. Just real bad luck.

Matt Maguire big boost for smiling Saints

Bruce Matthews | September 04, 2008 12:00am
TRAINING watchers couldn't believe their eyes as the tall newcomer flicked the ball to several teammates in a drill at Moorabbin yesterday.
Yes, it was key defender Matt Maguire. And how the Saints must wish he could run out with the team against Geelong on Sunday at the MCG.

Maguire, in rehabilitation for the third time on his troublesome left foot, joined the Saints at training for the first time since another injury prematurely ended his season four months ago.

The 24-year-old is just back from an overseas holiday during which he visited a UK specialist in a bid to return for Round 1 next season for what would be his 100th game.

Just to have Maguire and the similarly popular Fraser Gehrig around Moorabbin is aiding the feel-good factor in the build-up to football's toughest challenge against the Cats, who beat the Saints by 42 points in Round 4.

Dual Brownlow medallist Robert Harvey, the Saints' most experienced finals campaigner, is aware of the enormous challenge. "We definitely have to defend better. And I think we are defending better. And, obviously, their midfield depth is unbelievable. We have to get every little bit out of our midfield to match theirs," Harvey said.

"It's fair to say they don't lack much and we recognise that. We just have to attack the game from our perspective.

"We know what you get from Geelong and that's pretty consistent footy. We just hope we get a fair bit out of everyone of our players. Where that leads us, we don't know yet."

Star midfielder Lenny Hayes said the Saints are in sound form to try to duplicate the attacking flair that powered past Essendon to grab fourth spot last weekend.

"That's the way you've got to play footy these days. That's when we play our best footy, take a few risks and, like Harvs said before, we've also defended well on the flip side," he said.

"Obviously, you have to take risks to score against them (Geelong). They have a really good defence and really good midfield and their forward pressure is good also.

"I think the teams that have done well have put a lot of pressure on them and played an attacking brand."

Captain Nick Riewoldt was among a group including Steven King, Sam Fisher, Adam Schneider and Nick Dal Santo to run laps rather than join the rest of the squad of more than 30 players for the 70-minute session.

Brendon Goddard, Max Hudghton, Sam Gilbert, Hayes and Harvey did nothing more strenuous than stationary handball drills.

Harvey said his body was feeling good as he prepares for his 15th finals appearance in his last tilt at a premiership medal.

"Ross (coach Ross Lyon) has really managed my game-time well the last couple of weeks. Physically, I'm like the rest of the side, we've come together well over the last six weeks," he said.

First Hank, now the Goose

St Kilda Bowling Club has snaffled the services of AFL star Matt Maguire for 2008...

Injured St Kilda defender Matt Maguire may be the forgotten man at Moorabbin this week as the Saints prepare for their preliminary final showdown with Hawthorn, but the Goose is planning on making a return to the sporting arena on the weekend.

In a major coup, St Kilda Bowling Club has snaffled the services of the reliable backman, who will be the star attraction at the Fitzroy St club's open day this Sunday before making regular appearances for the outfit throughout the season.

A member of the club for the past three years, Maguire has signed up for St Kilda's World Series Bowls barefoot competition, which is played every Tuesday night and fancies his form on the green.

"My line and length is not too bad, but my depth needs a bit of work," an upbeat Maguire said earlier this week. I live down the road and I’ve been a member for three years, but I thought I might play a bit more regularly this season. Hopefully it can help my foot out."

Since being in contention for All-Australian honours in 2006, Maguire has endured a torrid time with injuries and will miss tomorrow night’s blockbuster preliminary final against the Hawks because of his ongoing foot problem.

Despite the setback, the dependable defender is looking forward to the bowls season and is hoping his Saints have two more wins left in them. "I’d love to be out there," Maguire said. "But that’s footy. "I don’t know where I’ll play, maybe in the magoos."

There will be a barbecue, music and barefoot bowls all day at the St Kilda Bowling Club’s open day on Sunday 21st Sept from 11am. For more details phone 9537 5229 or log on to www.stkildasportsclub.com.au

If Goose gets more stress fractures playing lawn bowls, who wants to go burn down the bowls club with me?
