Ferguson played a preety good game the other week against melbourne despite kicking 0 4. but what i don't get is that ross Lyon said that we have found a new lease of life up forward with Kosi not perfoming and riewoldt just plain shocking. But then the next week against the doggies he puts ferguson in the back pocket all day. to me thats just stupid.

Noticed Fergie has signed with Perth, along with Matthew Moody and Steven Armstrong. Hopefully he can get in the goals over there.

Birssy's gone to West Adelaide and it would be no surprise to see him make the state team. Rix might be there too (can only find rumours)?

Saw Rixy in the street, so thought I'd ask!

He hasn't decided where to play yet.

Not only have Perth signed Ferguson ,Moody, and Army they have also recruited Dean Dick from the Bombers and new coach Andrew Jarman.
So i expect them to be a force in the Wafl this year, on Ferguson from what i have seen in a couple of intra club games Jarman has him penciled in at full forward, he kicked 6 before halftime in one of them he looks a classy player and i reckon out of all our recruits he will be the stand out.
Can anyone shed any light on why the Saints delisted him, and how he went when he played for the Saints or his Vfl side.

He had a lot of injury concerns throughout his career.

And when he got his chance he didn't take it. I think he kicked 0.5 against the Dees? Then after that kinda drifted into nothing...

Guess they figured it was worth more betting on a new kid to try and use his role. Which is why we picked up Tom Lynch with our first pick.

Got a good leap, OK hands, and throws himself into packs/tackles. But wasn't the best kick at goal. Mind you, he was a regular goalkicker in the VFL and kicked a bag later in the season (was it 9.6 or 10.7? Something like that anyway).

His skills and speed aren't AFL standard in the modern day game i'm afraid. Tough players like him can't match it with those with the skills and legs.

BS..if you can get him fit he will be great value.

would have been playing AFL for years other than injuries (hamstring) continually cutting his fitness and chances to a minimum

You have an AFL player with soft tissue problems

Well he has completed the pre season and been very impressive in the two scratchies so far, with the Wafl pre season comp starting Friday, as iv'e stated Jarman has him penciled at full forward and so far so good.

The grounds over here are a bit bigger in the WAFL so there is more open space. From what I've seen so far he seems to be finding plenty of open space so he might just be in his element over here. There's only been two intra club scratchies so far so you can't read too much into them but so far I reckon he's held 11 out of 12 marks (all one grabbers) and kicked 11 out of 12 shots on goal.

First test is this Friday night in the first scratch match against opposition.

Good luck to him. I think he will do great at that level. He more than held his own in the VFL games.

Hard to look at Fergie favourably in those colours!!!

Matthew Ferguson hopes for big impact with Perth Demons

Article from: PerthNow March 23, 2009

Former St Kilda key position player Matthew Ferguson is glad he made the move to Perth in 2009 and is hoping to help the Demons to finals action.

Ferguson played 12 matches for the Saints in six years and could never quite cement his spot either up forward or defence.

He is perhaps best remembered for a massive screamer he took against Melbourne in Round 10 last year, but he's ready and looks capable of having a much greater impact with the Demons. He is also feeling terrific after a big pre-season.

"I did have a few injuries but if you are there for six years you've had your chances," Ferguson said.

"I've got no hard feelings, I had my chances and now I want to enjoy my footy and have an injury-free year. This is one of the best pre-seasons I've ever had and I'm looking forward to the season."

With St Kilda cutting him loose and no other club offering him a lifeline via the draft, Ferguson felt the time was perfect to look interstate and once he decided Western Australia was the way to go, he was immediately impressed with the way the Demons were shaping up under new coach Andrew Jarman.

"I was 24 and had nothing holding me down, so I decided I might as well make the move while I still could without too many hassles. I was deciding between Adelaide or here, and I was impressed by the young and exciting group of guys here at the club," Ferguson said.

"I went from being a young up and comer at St Kilda to now being a senior player here, and I'm enjoying that. They are a great bunch of guys and I reckon they have a lot of potential. The team hasn’t played finals in over 10 years, so it would be nice to help them achieve that."

Ferguson has also had little trouble settling in on or off the field since making the move and feels the team is ready to roll this Saturday against Peel after gradually getting better over the pre-season.

"The easy thing about moving interstate for footy is that straight away you have 40 mates. I'm enjoying every minute of it and don’t regret the move at all," he said.

"I'll try to help out as much as I can with passing on what I've learned over the last few years. I'm 24 but there's only a handful of guys older than me and I'd like to have a bit of an input with the young guys.

"The boys have been getting better each week we've played. Our first game against Peel was average, but then we just got knocked off by West Perth and had a good win over East Fremantle. We're slowly getting there, are getting used to the new coach and some new team rules and disciplines, and it's all going well."

Many players fresh off an AFL list for the first time since leaving school find it tough to adjust to having to find a regular job, but Ferguson has no such concerns apart from getting used to playing in the heat.

"I finished up in Melbourne at the end of last year and coming over here has been very enjoyable. I haven’t found it difficult at all actually. I'm doing an electrician's apprenticeship, am enjoying my footy and the lifestyle. It's taken a while to get used to the bigger grounds and playing in the heat, but I'm getting used to it more and more each week now," he said.

"The heat gets you in the second halves. Running in the sun after half time is definitely different than in Melbourne where the weather's hot and cold. Here you are in the sun all the time and have to make sure you are ready to run all the time. That first game during the day against West Perth left me knackered and I went home to bed. I'm getting used to it though."

Ferguson was never able to settle in any one spot while with the Saints, but this year he looks set to play as a regular key forward and with Matthew Moody, Kane Ransted, Ashley Thornton and Josh Krueger also down there, he's looking forward to being part of a potent attack.

"I played all my junior footy at full forward but at St Kilda I probably didn’t play any one position more than another. I played full back, centre half-back and a little forward, but I feel I play my best footy in the forward line and I'm happy to have found a spot up there under Jars," he said.

"He has given me a license to roam around, which is good. I like playing footy with Moods. He's tricky and smart, and you just have to give him a bit of eye contact to let him know where to run. Kane is also a similar player as he's quick and has good hands. The world's his oyster really and I don’t think he even knows how good he is."

As for his new coach Jarman, Ferguson is loving everything about him so far and at least knows his addresses, team meetings or training sessions will never be boring.

"He's great and perfect for where the team is at. He's brought in a lot of discipline, a few good team rules and he's also old school. As well as that, he's entertaining and not boring," he said.

"Sometimes in a long season, coaches can become boring by the end but he won't be like that. I like that he's not boring, but he's also honest and tells you exactly where you are at."
