  • Local Surfers Paradise Junior.
  • Power Backman who got the big jobs at AFL level. Ironically played forward in 1989 premiership only to go on to be a power backman at AFL level. A super trainer who left no stone unturned. A role model for juniors in years to come.

Brisbane Lions Team of the Decade

The backline comprised the six players who spent most time there during the premiership glory years with little debate among the selectors – Brian Burke, Mike Sheahan and Robert Walls – about who should fill those defensive posts, only about who should be in which position. And that was taking into account the claims of former club favourites Danny Dickfos and Matthew Kennedy.

The final place in the 22 was cause for most debate amongst the selectors, with two-time premiership player Robert Copeland, former Bears All-Australian and club champion Craig Lambert, and loyal club servants Richard Champion and Kennedy in the mix.

The club honored the retiring Matthew Kennedy by having him lead the ticker tape parade the team was afforded when they returned from Melbourne and their GF victory.

Brisbane and James Aish agree to continue contract talks, but Lions losing hope of keeping young gun

Meanwhile, the overhaul at the Suns continues with former Lion Matthew Kennedy to take over as head of fitness for the remainder of the year.

Present strength and conditioning coach Stephen Schwerdt has resigned and will return to Adelaide in a job with South Australian cricket.

Coach Rodney Eade has been critical of the Suns running ability and has appeared to be on a different page to Schwerdt.

Kennedy is a hard task master and will satisfy Eade’s demands to push the side harder.

Football manager Marcus Ashcroft said the position will be advertised at the end of the season but added Kennedy would be a strong contender.

“Max is so highly respected among his peers and also the players, he is in the seat now so he has a chance to make it his own,’’ he said.

Since I probably won't get another excuse to post about Maxy.
