Unlike a fair few posters on Bigfooty (granted most on Bay 13 which doesn't count), people don't seem to rate Matthew Stokes. I do, and I think he is only going to get better. One question I have, why did he play a lot more down back last night??
He has made his name, and been sensational, as being the small forward. He is strong over-head (which is surprising being that he is nearly a midget), good accurate kick for goal, and smart when it's on the ground. Was he playing a Chappy role, or was it maybe a learning experience, about letting him earn his own ball as opposed to getting fed it???

Just curious as to your thoughts, as really at half time you needed goals in a hurry and he can provide them, why was he persisted down back??

So I gather the Bay 13 nuffies think he's one of twenty Geelong players that were carried through last year

Not sure why but I thought he was a small defender in the SANFL.Can anyone confirm ?

I rate little Stokes very highly.
Didn't he go at late 60's in the draft?

*edit I think his first name is spelt with only one T.

yep.

Was a 3X junior AA to as well. People had worries over his height/commitment.

Glad we got him, is a little gun. Will bounce back after a very very average game.

Height isn't always a factor in AFL.
Look at Brent Harvey, for one example - 172 centimetres tall and finished equal second in the Brownlow last year.
Stokes makes me very happy when I watch football because he does things that people his size aren't always able to do - and he does them well.
I wish him well for the rest of his career at Geelong/anywhere else.

I have no idea where he played last night, he was unsighted and had one of his worse games in a Geelong jumper... so this means nobody rates him now, and he's been a passenger since he was drafed?

typical bay 13 attitude only displayed by non cats fans.

Spot on. He may have been average last night, but he has really come on over the past 12 months.

I think he's getting a run on the wing... but yeah last night wasn't one of his best games... he'll bounce back & hopefully recapture that awesome form he had in the 1st few rounds

Correct, play a number of games out of the back pocket for the Eagles and supplied a lot of attack and run out of there. Coupled with his disposal and decision making he was often the link man out of defence.

he's probably one of my favourite players and he's really lifted his game this year, bomber has sort of turned him into a midfielder who drifts forward

He's actually getting a small run in the midfield this year. According to stats in the HUN on Friday, he's been at the centre bounce 19 times this year. However I suspect the he played back a little just to 1) get into the play and 2) provide some run off the backline. Steve Johnson did the same thing in the last quarter. Unfortunately O'Brien, Johnson's opponent, didn't follow him and played as a loose man across half back.
