1. Batting should only come into it once the quality of keeping reaches a certain level.

2. That type of miss off Lyon has the potential to ruin a spinner's test career.

3. If Haddin had missed that catch nobody would give a shit that he hit a century earlier in the day.

I think they need to persist with Wade, he will improve, think though if he misses one or two in the early ashes test he may be in trouble.

My worry is Hussey's retirement may open the door for Australia to bring an old player back like Haddin. I think his keeping is not as good as Wades current form is so hopefully he doesn't go to England.

I like Paine, and think he would be the current keeper if not for his unfortunate injury timing wise, but I think that ship has sailed.

Are we talking about the missed catch off Lyon?

I think their keeping is about the same (eg my opinion is the same as last year). Wade's bowling (seriously) would be why he would be the 6 though. And I have no doubt Wade 6 Haddin 7 (or vice versa) is stronger than Usman 6 Wade 7. so it's whether they want to take the risk

It would be insane to replace wade as keeper with haddin, haddin like wade was a batsmen first keeper second.

I know there were rumours they were at one point going to bat wade in the top 6 and have haddin as keeper but it just makes no sense if you bat wade at 6 and pick a high quality specialist keeper at 7 why would you go for a 35 year old who even at his peak wasn't a great keeper?

If Paine had scored a mountain of runs then maybe he would be an option. If the selectors drop Wade it will be for Haddin. I almost get the feeling Haddin will be in to replace Hussey.
God help us.

I was going to post a separate thread, but this one should do...

Could Wade keep his spot in the team as a specialist bat? In 9 matches, he has 2 centuries and 2 fifties with an average of 45. His FC average is a shade over 40. And he is still only 25. He compares pretty favourably to the likes of, say, Usman Khawajah. Not necessarily saying that Wade is a better bat than Usman since they bat under very different circumstances (a number 3 vs a number 7). But it makes you wonder what Wade might be able to achieve if he focused solely on his batting. Whereas as a keeper, he is a real chance of being dropped.

Let's face it, the cupboard is pretty bare in terms of batting talent at the moment. Wade would probably be better than most of the nuffies floating around Shield cricket at the moment.

Normally you would say no he couldn't play in the top 6 but with hussey gone wade actually has the next best batting average(after clarke) in our top 6 which is kinda depressing.

My issue is him moving permanently to 6 so we can accommodate an over the hill haddin as a keeper.

If Wade plays as a bat, Haddin shouldn't even be considered as a keeper. His time is over.

The thing that I find strange about Wade is that in the West Indies, he actually kept really well. Didn't miss any chances, took some good catches off Lyon and made some good stumpings.

see i'm not so sure about this. he played a season with an elbow injury (which led to over the hill-esque performances), then his elbow healed, adjusted his batting grip and then outperformed usman, dussey etc in the shield.

Yeah i don't think many aussie were able to watch much of that series, he did indeed keep very well on much tougher pitches.

Not sure what has gone wrong this summer, hopefully CA can get somebody like healy to work with him, healy is a nonsensical rambler on basically everything except keeping.

Even if he was back in form with the bat we would still be dumping a young batsmen who keeps to accommodate an old batsman who keeps.

At least wade has time on his side to improve his keeping, haddin is never going to be a quality keeper.

We wouldn't be dumping Wade. We'd be deciding that the best top 7 we can roll out contains both Wade and Haddin, and then deciding Wade fields because of his seamers (seriously. clarke loves having a seaming part time option. in a post hussey world, wade's the only guy. usman and dussey are spinners too. hughes, cowan and haddin don't bowl.). Keeping for me doesn't come into it that much at all.

We have two Ashes series coming up. Just pick whoever is best right now.

In Wade's current form it's a toss of the coin as to who is a better keeper, and Haddin has Ashes experience.

Well then the logical thing would be keep the young guy in to improve his keeping and select somebody like usman as a batsmen.

Also how we would then judge the recalled haddin?

if he kept well and averaged 20 is that a pass mark?

if he kept poorly but averaged 40+ like wade has is that a pass or fail?

So we pick the best keeper available for the ashes, well then why would it be simply deciding wade vs haddin?

if it's mostly on their keeping then you wouldn't pick either man.

One problem, Haddin is a better batsman than Usman right now. So is Wade. We have got two Ashes series in 12 months. Now's not the time to start picking younger blokes for the sake of it
