Just wondering how Melbourne fans rate this guy. Is he a serious player of the future or do you think he is filling in time untill he gets edged out?

IMO he is in out best 22, he had a very good yr, however we have a large number of emerging medium to tall backmen who could possibly push him out of the side in the future, its going to be interesting to see whether he can hold his spot (which he seems capable of) or be brushed aside by a talented youngter.

Definitely is a goer, and will give you all he has got. No doubt he will get his fair share of games next year.

However will he still be in the Best 22 come 2010? I'm not so sure, I think Stef Martin is the long-term FB, with Garland and Rivers as the floaters. That said, Rivers is injured so often that Warnock may find himself in that side for a while yet.

Bottom line being that Warnock, if he wants to keep that spot, will need to keep improving because we can be certain that Martin and McNamara will only get better and better.

Warnock is a solid citizen, but I'd be surprised if he isn't usurped before too long. As mentioned, Martin, Garland, and Rivers are all capable of holding key defensive posts, and they all have more polish than Warnock. Also, James Frawley now measures 195cms according to a recent MFC web article and has bulked up considerably. He too shapes as an option, but needs to make inroads this year.

So do I see Warnock as a long term key back at Melbourne ? No.

I don't see him as a long termer either, but given that he was odds on to get the boot at the start of last year he's done massively well since. Good, honest player and I like his work but he's not the future.

Rivers is the future - unfortunately a future where doctors are able to turn him into something resembling Robocop.

I can honestly say that I felt safe with Warnock with the ball in 2008 - apart from Wheels & Humphrey (Garland) he's our surest mark and most reliable kick from the back.

I can see his strength and courage being an asset well into 2010.

He's solid, does the disciplined things...i mean, i think he is a 'good' AFL player, but i don't think he's got the scope for improvement that Frawley, Garland & Martin do...

He's not really deficient in any area, but he doesn't stand out in any one area (if that makes sense...)

He's sort of a Nick Maxwell type (just a good team oriented player who can do a job, but won't really provide an offensive/rebounding threat like a Matthew Scarlett...)

He's a bit one-dimensional, but he's pretty good at what he does, i.e. closing down an opponent & doing the defensive stuff...

Agree.
He is a solid player, but that's all he is, as for being the future he's 24/25 so he has little scope for improvement left.
I don't see him being a constant 22 player next year, let alone 2010, however he's a perfect depth player.
The only way I think he would continue to get regular games past next year is if we trade away another tall back.

I think he has a good head on his sholders actually, doesn't panic under pressure - good maturity and not too bad a player either. Very handy to keep.

Agree with most others when saying he will probably be a little far down in the pecking order come mid-way through 2009.

I don't think he is in competition too much with Garland as Garland (and to a lesser extent Rivers) will take the Franklin's of the world while Warnock would line up on a Roughead type, as would Martin who I believe is his main competition.
