In the article in the advertiser on Friday about the saints recycled players Rucci wrote a throwaway line suggesting that Adam Schneider had been offered in some form or another when the Mattner trade was being discussed with Sydney. I have never heard this before so I don't know if this is just Rucci journalism or something that actually happened.

If in fact Schneider was offered I would be pretty disappointed if we didn't take it. He seems like exactly the type of player we need - a small forward with very good goal sense. We have been crying out for this type of player for years and even now I don't think we have a clear candidate for that role with us constantly trying to throw guys like Dougie into that position which has been pretty detrimental to his development as a midfielder.

For Mattner we got pick 28 which we then traded to Port for Symes. I love the way Symes goes about his footy. Hard at it, always gives 100% and puts his body on the line time and time again. Unfortunately his disposal lets him down too often. And in the end he's another HBF/midfielder and we have plenty of those types on our list.

If the pick we got for Mattner was used to pick another Otten like gem from the draft then I wouldn't be too fussed and would be happy we went for the kid in the draft. However given we ontraded it anyway would we have been better doing a direct trade - Schneider for Mattner.?

Given Sydney traded Schneider and Dempstar(?) for a second round pick and Mattner for a second round pick I would have thought a direct swap of Mattner for Scneider would have been a pretty fair trade.

What do people think? Has anyone else heard that Schneider was offered up in that trade?

IIRC, Schneider wanted to go home to Melbourne so coming to Adelaide would obviously have defeated that purpose. Having said that, I'd like to think the Crows would have at least made some enquiries as to whether he was open to joining the club. Otherwise, it would have been pretty ordinary to overlook a young-ish quality player like that.

Schneider is notfrom Melbourne - he is from country NSW.

exactly. He was offered to us in a direct swap for Mattner we turned him down and instead on traded the pick for Symes. I would love Schnieder in our team at the moment BUT i think Brad Symes is far to important for us, goes unnoticed by a lot but he is so tough and adds a lot of hardness to our team.

Why was Schneider on the table in the first place? He was a gun rookie with superb skills and the type of player you'd think Sydney could build their side around with some of their retiring veterans.

If he was in fact available and the Crows turned him down, I wouldn't be too happy about it.

My understanding is that they we felt we didn't need both Amon Buchanan and Adam Schneider on our list, and we felt that Amon offered more.

Is this serious?

IMO Schneider is doing well at the Saints however he is not a lost opportunity and would not have made us a better side

Yes very, if you dont think symes is important to us you really have no idea and dont watch games properly.

Right-o mate. I don't care or not if he's in the side this season, or even next, but when we build the side that will actually geniunely challenge for a flag he will be lucky to be there, certainly not 'far too important to us'.

I didn't like the Mattner trade then, still don't really like it now, but am not too phased about it. At the end of the day I think it will have little bearing on the future, but Symes would be a long way from being nominated as one of our most important players for mine.

yeh, i would have rather have drafted someone with that 28 pick to be honest..

not a fan of symes.. i get that david gallagher feeling everytime he gets the ball.. i always go 'ah shit, here comes a turnover' to my mate when he gets the ball.. sure he may be hard at the ball, but if you can't kick and are slow, we may as well draft some big fat prop from rugby

It still puzzles me why we even needed to trade Mattner. I know he didn't seem to fit in with Craig's plan at the time, but surely he could be playing the same role Symes currently plays. He was just as hard at the ball and his disposal is probably better. He was a tackling machine and was a very good player for us. I know Symes was getting 40 touches regularly in the SANFL at the time (performances which were ignored by Choco), but Mattner would get huge numbers playing at that level too.

Mattner is a country SA boy so surely he would have been happy to stay in Adelaide for as long as we'd have him. I like Symes, and he has a lot of upside, but Mattner's weaknesses are fewer than Symes'. The trade was so pointless it makes me think there was undisclosed reasons why he had to go.

that wasn't the greatest summer of list management. we had players wanting to leave, senior players saying footy wasn't fun etc. I am not sure we didn't learn more than a few lessons along the way from it. so thats something.

Sydney had been tracking Mattner all year, Roos felt there was more in him than how we were using him, and when he was approached mid year no doubt he felt flattered to be wanted.

we didn't trade him per se, we created an environment where he was susceptible to another team flashing a bit of leg at him. c'est la vie.
