Not sure if theres more than meets the eyes and I might be blind Freddy but I cant see why this boy has gone backwards this year. He was close to BOG against Pies in the season openerbut has been noticeably quiet since.

His peers like Rutten and Trent (yes Mac 23/Stiffy he has gotten better lately ) are playing around the same or better level than last yr but somethings amiss with Marty.

Form/injury/attitude/other?? Somethings definitely wrong. Blind Freddy can see it

But I think he is suffering from a team structure issue. He is a great line buster and when he was on the wing he was also an attacking tackler that swooped on any midfielder who strayed near him and forced the turnover. He felt comfortable on the wing as well..whereas now from the HBF he seems to be in 2 minds about his defensive role V his attacking role

I am sure as the season progresses he will adapt a lot better and be a better defensive person for it..

I get the feeling most Crows are suffering from a general soreness. But Mattner maybe carrying a groin related strain... he doesnt take off as quick as he did

I agree with this, he seems to be a bit slower over the first 20 mtrs which IMO is hindering him breaking clear of players and not allowing him to get to and stick his now famous tackles.


Haven't seen his stats but IMO his tackle count would be down V last year.

He's not in the top 50. If he's not injured, then he should definately wear the "inconcistent" label.

2005 ave. tackles/game = 4.0
2006 ave. tackles/game = 2.7

If you were to direct any criticism at our impressive coaching staff I reckon their handling of Mattner has been ordianry at best. He must feel as though he had slipped back into the Gary Ayres years where Ayres insistance to use him as a tagger or defender nearly ruined his career.

As i've said before, Mattner is a natural run the lines, aggressive tackling, attacking wingman, and a damn blo*dy good one. Why would youy want to reinvent him as a defender or tagger? Let him do what he does best.

SpringChoke, is there never a point when James Fantasia becomes irrevelant to the issue, and the onus falls on the players themselves, and the coaching and development staff in regards to how well that player performs?

Bock, Rutten, Mattner and Hentschel all clearly have a lot of talent. Rutten is the All-Australian fullback. Fantasia picked all these players outside the National Draft and they were all great picks.

Five and a half years later, what does Fantasia have to do with these players now?

As for Mattner specifically, he definitely is down on his output from the last season, especially the first half of it when he was on fire.

Unfortunately I haven't seen enough games this year to suggest any reasons why, but I'll be watching very closely tonight.

Mcleod23 is right on this one Springy.

It's a bit like blaming a parent for a 40 year old's behaviour after he/she had been a model citizen up until the age of 25 or more.

They've all shown exceptional ability on the big stage - Fantasia has reared them correctly, using the same analogy.

Now that they're big boys and grown up, the rest is up to them.

Just on Mattner, he's definitely playing a more defensive role now that Bock's missing. Whether that's by design or accident I'm not sure, but it certainly has reduced his obvious impact on a game.

Don't worry Springy, he'll come good.

Totally disagree mate. Although I will wait until the end of this year to properly assess the 4 and therefore James' record. If you can't assess a recruiters record 5 years down the track how else are you going to do it. Unless the players top shelf, most players don't really come into there own until between the 3-5 year. So you can't really make a PROPER assessment before then. If a player hasn't shown anything by his 5th year, there's a pretty good chance he will be a dud, ala Matt Smith. Obviously there maybe a few exceptions.

As for the 4 above ( Bock is going to be hard ) we can't really make a proper assessment until the end of this year. They really didn't show much pre-2005 but they showed plenty last year, especially Mattner and Rutten. However, let's not get too carried away yet as the football world is littered with 1 year wonders.

I agree with this - he has been asked to take a more defensive role this year with others either injured or playing further up the ground. Mattner and "The Prepubescent" seemed to have almost swapped roles this year - this has certainly worked out for Doubty - but not Mattner. Perhaps fitness issues have forced Craig to make this change..

Mattner's plateau in form is not Fantasia's fault Springy !...

If Mattner never had it in him - then maybe you've got an arguement......lapses in form are an indication that the player is capable...

He is injured, so don't worry he will come good again. We are currently playing a few players out of necesity because of our long injury list. Expect him to be rested when JT is OK to return.

All of those players, 3 rookies and a pre-season pick either will or already have played 50 games of AFL for us.

Have a look at who the other 15 clubs selected pre-season and rookie drafted in 2001 and see how many of them have done that. I don't have that info here, but I'll wager Fanta's strike rate for 2001 is pretty exceptional.

There are a few quality players that have come off the rookie list and won AA selections.

Chad Fletcher and Dean Cox are couple from WC. Then there is Rutten and while I don't think he ever got AA selection, Mal Michael was also another quality player picked on the Rookie list.

IIRC, Woewodin was a PS selection as was Goody, Edwards, Vardy and Hentschel.

Woey never actually won AA selection - not even in his 2000 Brownlow year.

Apart from Rutten and the ones Stiffy just beat me to the punch on, the only other one I can think of is Brett Kirk.

Other notable recent rookie listers: Damien Peverill, Darren Jolly, Russell Robertson, Robert Copeland, Jarad Rooke, Josh Drummond, Digby Morrell ()...

Why doesn't Trent appear on the PSD list? Not much to write home about on the PSD list there - I think Trent certainly looks the pick of that bunch.

Marty looks to be down on confidence. He's certainly not 1 grabbing the ball - tending to either 2 grab it or overrun it.
