What does everyone think of Matty Dea?

Dimma seems to love him and we saw him lean towards him to fill the gaps last year in some games.

I have concerns with his disposal but I think he will be good in time.

Views?

I haven't seen him enough to be an expert on him, but i would agree that he is at times very sluggish and expects the ball to be delivered rather than getting it.

He needs to add something to his game. He's clearly a tough hombre but if he's to make it he has to be a regular in the midfield rotation. If not it's unlikely he'll get to 50 games.

He is strange one. He has been on the list for four years now. He has only played 24 games, 3 of which came this year.

He is a good size, and a player who consistently gets appears in the best at VFL.

However 2014 will be his last chance. I also reckon it will be his last year on the list. I can't see him getting past Houli or Ellis as an attacking defender or Morris as a lockdown defender. I reckon there is only 1 spot on the list between Batchelor & Dea going in to 2015 and next year will decide who will get it.

I am expecting big things for Batch next year.

Don't know why people keep saying this. From now on we won't be making drastic changes to our list at years end. 3 maybe 4 changes. Next year imo Newman, King and A.Edwards will be gone. Same goes for guys like O'Hanlon and Helbig. These guys have a couple more years to improve.

Why would we get rid of AEdwards or Newman?

Clearly he hovers somewhere between VFL and AFL level. Whilst I think his best is good enough for AFL, maybe his value to the squad extends beyond his pure playing ability.

I remember Pat Steinfort being on our list for 5 years without playing a single game and I remember hearing that he was an asset off field.

They should all be overtaken by our youth. And to be honest, Newman has been slowly declining in form over the last couple of years. His age dictates that that should continue. And even if you were to argue that we could maybe get one more year out of him/Edwards/King, it would not be in the best interest of the team as you have to allow your younger players a chance to flourish with more game time.

I like him and think he will be taking Newys spot. Biggest problem for him is that he doesn't get it enough at AFL level.

Isn't he apart of our secondary leadership group as well?

Dea's next year is crucial, he was asked to bulk up last preseason so he could play a little taller, he stars at VFL level but lacks confidence and gets flustered at AFL level - only thing thats going to reduce that is exposure, hence why next years crucial. Seems to me hell be consistently depth as when newy comes out pettard will take his spot permanently but still thikin he's definantly worth keeping

What about Newy moving into the forward line, slide into a forward pocket?

Has looked OK coming through the midfield some times, but I just don't see him as offering much.
No idea of his best position, but overall he just looks below the grade

Didn't Dea come to AFL late (was a Basketballer ??). He also had a number of injuries if memory serves. There seems to have been quite a bit invested in him, including the Brazil trip this season. At this stage I think he has made some real improvements over the last season or 2. as others have mentioned regularly seems to get in to VFL bests. I see him at minimum a fringe player (best 25) at this stage. I think he has a strong work ethic and it's this and some more footy at the top level that will see him continue to climb. For what its worth I'm backing Matty....... I think as we see as his confidence growing, it will be the difference ( because he certainly has the physical attributes & not afraid to go hard either).

Since he's in the Rio group will not be delisted, don't know what the coaches see in him because I see him as a fringe player who just isn't up to it. If he can make things happen when the ball is in his hands then maybe it might change my mind about him. One more year. That's it. If he doesn't prove himself next year and isn't delisted there are going to be some serious questions needed to be asked as to why he is still kept.

I've gotta agree STW. I reckon we’ve seen the end of more than 3 or 4 list changes every season. It’ll probably only be retiring players that leave the club, with buggar all delistings of players under 25, for a few years anyway.

When the club said we were taking a back seat in trades after Hampson was picked up, whoever it was talking to the media used the words “list stability”. I reckon that’s part of Hardwick’s long term plan. Get a group of young blokes together, keep them together and let them all develop together.

Dea’s definitely part of that. So is Batchelor. They’ll be given a few more years to come on, IMO. So will Astbury, Griffiths, Helbig and O’Hanlon. At worst, they are all handy VFL players, and we need to field a team at Punt Road.

Back to the topic of the thread, after my small tangent, I reckon I’d play Batch at AFL level in front of Dea, but both would probably be a walk up start at the Demons or GWS.

Keep. I like him. Not certain he will make it but deserves another couple of years.

Has plenty of courage and equal amounts of mongrel. I don't see his skills as a huge problem. Composure is more the issue and that will hopefully improve with more confidence and a decent run at it.
