Worst on Ground: Essendons Defence

I reaken Matty Knights was telling our players to give their opponents 5 metres space during every contest.

Either he's telling them that or he's telling them not to defend at all.

IMO there was no worst on Ground yesterday, simply Sydney were too good yesterday and our boys were just learning from yesterdays experiance, I really hope Matty Knights tries to win a handful more games for the rest of the year, cause our younger players won't just learn from mistakes and losses, they'll need a win or 2.

anyone who wants to blame lloyd or the FF for a 91pt drubbing needs to stop and think.. anyone watching could see that lloyd did his best.. not a lot you can do when the ball is coming in short, high, wide or just not at all!!

laycock and others were far worse... also easy to blame defenders (who weren't great) but in the modern game it is midfield, midfield and or midfield that determines how successful your defence and attack can be.. if the mids aren't slowing the ball delivery through the middle and dropping back to the fill the holes.. well we can all see the result! any quality mid (like those from syd) will hit a target inside 50, 9/10 times if there is no pressure on the ball carrier.. that is where we lack any sense of urgency and defence..

Yeah, I happen to agree. We struggle in defense, Ryder is a little out of form, Fletcher is past it (in my opinion) and we're struggling to give Michael a proper match-up.

Agree.

My question is this, will Knights bite the bullet and pick a midfielder with our first selection in this year's draft? The reason I say that is because I'm expecting to say "we've got 10 midfielders who can be rotated through the middle at any given time"... in reality, they just aren't up to it and to be perfectly honest with you I can't see 1 player on our list that will be an elite midfielder, Houli will be solid... Myers, well who knows if he'll play middle or not, perhaps could play the Pendlebury role but really he hasn't played enough to show that he's capable. We are stuffed in the middle... Daniel Rich won't be enough, we'll need Naitinui to tap it to him as well.

Boy, Hille, must pull his finger out, I've never been a fan and I'd be more than happy to eat my words but as a ruckman... he's just not good enough! Laycock......... meh!

He's playing like he's been told to do nothing. It looks like he's always frustrated with himself, or someone else.

But he's definitly not past it.

Of course he is frustrated as he is playing sore and is looking more and more like an old man every game.

He is still giving his best but it appears that his body won't let him do a lot of what he wants to do.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Dusty pull the pin at the end of the year.

Lol

Yeah, your statement is probably more accurate...

I hope Fletchers departure is a good one, cause he deserves the most outgoing respect up with the other champions of Essendon like Hird and Sheed's got. Fletch is a true champ..... I was hoping he'd get past the 300 game mark, BTW how many games is it now...

He's on 283 games. (Just checked EFC Website)

Unless we make the grand final, he wont be getting the 300 milestone this year.

It'd be perfect if Fletch retired at the end of the season and immediately became our defensive role/coach for next year. Of coarse it'd be devastating loosing such a player but we'd still have the knowledge to pass down to the youngsters of our club...

I'm not really implying anything..... Cause I'd love for him to play as long as possible.

send him some video's of Fev a few years back, he had no one up forward for support & played on multiple opponents, the blues midfield couldnt kick it well to him, kicked it over his head, at his feet, no where near him most of the time but he still won the coleman that season.

lloyds probably a better footballer mentally as fev can be a little erratic some times but lloyd will have to just get back to the basics, keep on his feet & lead strong & hard & eventually someone will hit him with a good kick.

good forwards can do it when the goings easy, its what they do when the going is crap that makes them more important to the team.
