Pleasantly surprised with his game today. He got a lot of it, and is starting to really hold his own & put the pressure on up forward. He was a great compliment to Pav last week, but I don't think he's a Pav replacement just yet. I'd like to see him take his time a bit more, and think about his disposals.

Exactly. Although he'd shown good attributes with his endurance and leading he was a pretty ineffective player at the top level.

He hadn't been given much of a shot. He played in our win vs Essendon early in the year and kicked 2 goals playing as a deep forward, then in the next game was subbed off just after half time and dropped afterwards. I have been saying since the Essendon game that he should have been given more opportunities. I think more than anything that the club had its heart set on Apeness because they wanted a full forward to release Pavlich further up the ground. Now it seems they are happy to play Pav deep and let Taberner play CHF, which is a good result IMO.

Did like Taberner when we had the ball, got to all the right spots, used his body well and provided a great option. What I didn't like about him was when we didnt have the ball, his chase and defensive pressure left a lot to be desired. Can improve on that part of his game. All being said, step forward for the young fella.

A fair comment, and he lifted this part of us game today. Great to have him in the team. :thumbsu:

Pretty much. I'd say they wanted Apeness because we are desperate for someone who can drag in big marks which is not Taberners go. What Tabs needed to do was show his hard running and get involved when the ball is on the ground which he hadn't really done except in glimpses. Now that he is using his strengths - mobility, good hands, well timed leading and repeat running he has become an asset. It looks completely different up front now with him dragging defenders away and letting Walters and Balla get to work.

I really think that in a couple of year Tabs & Ape are going to really compliment each other. One really agile, run all day player in Tabs, and the massive pressure of the beast that is Ape. They're completely different players playing a similar position on the ground, and having the two-prong tall attack with our midget forwards is a really exciting prospect for Freo. Unless of course Pav plays forever - which he should - then we might have to sneak all 3 talls into the side.

yes its actually looking like a decent tall combination as they have such different strengths as you say. Add in Balla, Walters, Crozier, Duffy and Mayne and that is looking pretty potent going forward.

The effort was always there, but it's only been in the last couple of weeks that the chemistry with the other players and hitting the scoreboard that have stepped up his influence. Remember, he was an emergency last week and only came in when Ballas was an out, so this was in some ways a happy accident. He couldn't have timed it better.

Very impressed. I'm glad I never wrote him off. Young developing tall always takes time. He's doing damn well to keep his position in the team.

Let's be honest. We all had doubts about Tabs. The number of KPFs who don't make it is astoundingly high. And we have had plenty over the years. But Tabs has shown massive growth this year and particularly in the last few weeks. Got 110 dream team points today - not bad for a guy playing full forward!!!!

Question - do we need to buy a Cloke or Riewoldt and waste all of our spare salary cap?
Answer - no, not if Tabs, Apeness and A Pearce keep taking big steps forward.
