Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell has accepted the Match Review Panel’s offer of a two-match suspension.

He will miss the round four match in Brisbane this Friday night and the ANZAC Day clash with Essendon.

Maxwell was charged with a Level Two engaging in rough conduct offence against Geelong’s Steve Johnson during the second quarter of last Thursday’s round three match at the MCG.

In summary, Maxwell’s previous poor record and his existing carry-over points from within the last 12 months meant that his two-match sanction couldn’t be reduced, even with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction.

He has one match suspended within the last three years, which increased the penalty by 10 per cent to 247.50 points. He also has 82.81 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 330.31 points and a three-match sanction.

An early plea reduced the penalty by 25 per cent to 247.73 points and a two-match sanction.

Heath Shaw faces a charge of intentionally making contact with an umpire (Michael Vozzo) during the second quarter of the clash with the Cats. The matter has been referred directly to the AFL Tribunal, with the hearing set down for Tuesday evening

If you read the actual report from the MRP, Maxwell had no chance of getting off. The contact was deemed intentional (cant be argued against), low impact (he did hit him), and body contact was the other category.

All of these are actually correct to the letter of the AFL rules, but what hurt Maxwell this time was that the contact quite simply was too far off the ball, and was therefore unnecessary and reportable.

Hopefully now he just tones down his aggression at the opposition a little bit, and targets that aggression on the ball when he returns.

Yet there were similar and worse 'hits' that were thrown out and deemed reasonable.

You can't have something called 'to the letter' when it's grey at best and contradictory at worst.

Maxwell accepts 2 match ban

  • NICK Maxwell has accepted a two-match ban for rough conduct against Steve Johnson in the opening quarter of last Thursday's match.
The Magpie skipper chose not to challenge the sanction offered to him for making contact with Johnson off the ball.
Hawk hardman Campbell Brown will face the tribunal to contest a ban for engaging in rough conduct against Kangaroo Daniel Wells. If he's found guilty he faces three weeks on the sidelines.
Port Adelaide won't contest suspensions to captain Dom Cassisi and onballer Peter Burgoyne.
Cassisi was offered a one-match ban for striking Melbourne's Lynden Dunn during the Power's victory at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.
Burgoyne was given a two-match suspension for kneeing Demon Aaron Davey.
Both Port players were given three-match bans, reduced by early guilty pleas, which the Power confirmed had been made on Tuesday.

Port plays reigning premier Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday.
Maxwell's teammate Heath Shaw faces a two-match suspension if the AFL match review panel's recommendation is accepted by the tribunal tonight.
The panel will suggest Shaw's contact with field umpire Michael Vozzo deserves 225 demerit points, the equivalent of two games.

The Magpie's act, when he laid a hand on Vozzo's shoulder in the second quarter on Thursday night, was assessed as intentional.

While Shaw would normally receive a discount for a five-year clean record and by pleading guilty tonight, that is entirely at the discretion of the three-man jury of ex-players in this case.

"It's up to the tribunal to determine what is the appropriate penalty," AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson said last night.

Football figures remain divided on the Shaw incident.

Grant Thomas and Peter Daicos said the umpire contact rule had to be reviewed.

Former St Kilda coach Thomas said a reprimand would be appropriate for Shaw.

"I think the law of common sense needs to prevail at some point," he said.

"If it comes down to the fact that you are not allowed to lay one finger on any part of an umpire, well what's Luke Hodge doing putting his arm around the umpire (Round 1) and having a joke with the free kick?

"Common sense prevailed then. I reckon common sense needs to prevail now."

Former Carlton hard man David Rhys-Jones said a suspension was warranted.

"You know that from day dot when you first start playing that you can't touch an umpire," Rhys-Jones said.

Re: Maxwell accepts 2 match ban

So, if not for some very good legal work, Maxwell could have missed 4 of the first 5 games of his captaincy through two separate suspensions...

Re: Maxwell accepts 2 match ban

Hopefully this teaches Maxy to start focusing his aggression at the ball & not the player.

Picking blokes off behind the play is not the way to show leadership.

Re: Maxwell accepts 2 match ban

lol picking blokes off.... it was hardly a Dom Cassisi. All maxy did was brace for contact, johnson did the running.

It was a pointless, undisciplined act and what has he got to show for it?

A two week holiday.

Wasn't likely to put Johnson in Hospital, but it was an unnecessary show of strength that might cost us this week.

Agreed :thumbsu:

I think this suspension is typical of Maxwell's mindframe atm. He knows he is not a very good footballer and he feels that because of this, he needs to do other things to show leadership - the answer he came up with was "knock blokes around". That was the wrong answer.

I'm losing my patience with Maxwell, he was lucky to get off in the NAB Cup with the way the rules are and he seems more focused on the man than the footy ALL THE TIME. Choosing a captain who isn't good enough to demand a place in the team is beyond me. If he wasn't captain Malthouse would punish him and if Goldsack or whoever replaces him performs, he would be kept out and made to force his way in - as any average player who has no special skills that win games should. Now though, because he's captain he's straight in when his suspension's finished regardless.

Maxwell was a natural leader before he got the captaincy and that transfers to the team regardless of the title but now that he's captain, he's proven that when he 'tries' to be a leader he is immature and an even more ineffective player. Poor form Maxy and poor form Collingwood, its early days but we made a horrible decision there.

Re: Maxwell accepts 2 match ban

It may have been mentioned before, but does anyone else remember luke hodge (i think) putting his arm around the umpire in a game recently?

Re: Maxwell accepts 2 match ban

Maxwell has never been dropped in his whole career, why? because he is clearly in our best 22. Those that think Goldsack would be better is laughable at best. What he done here is a joke, it is no different to what Rooke did to Mitchell round one and he got off.

People just look for things to bag the captain out because he isn't a Nathan Buckley or Scott Burns. He's been captain for all of 3 games, give the guy a chance to build into the role. He is a known slow starter but will come good, just dont be so quick to judge.

very surprised you guys didn't fight his charge - i thought they got the MRP quite wrong this weekend.

C.Brown - Lucky to get off
N.Maxwell - Could have had his charge dropped i think
H.Shaw - could have been given anything upto 4 weeks and deemed justifiable.

As Maxwell is Captain you cannot drop him.
What a better way of getting him out of the side without having to drop him.
Don't fight the charge and have him suspended.
In the end, everyone is happy. The AFL for getting a suspension, the Collingwood selectors because they can't drop him yet don't want him in the side and the happiest of the lot is Big Bucks. :p
No Hackwell for 2 weeks. What do you say to that Big Bucks. :D

This suspension looks a lot like an attempt at petty AFL payback because Maxwell was cleared during the NAB Cup.

I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over Maxwell's suspension but - as written above - they have booked him for things he could not argue, thereby closing any loopholes. It all seems a bit childish on the AFL's part, given the innocuous contact he made on Johnson.
