A comment on another thread about Maxwell's constant roaming forward and back got me thinking about his gradual onward-and-ever-upward improvement over the seasons. Seems to me he's another Lockyer in the making, able to play pretty much anywhere, great endurance, competent rather than brilliant, gritty as all hell, kinda like Scotty and Licuria. He continues to beef up too, and at 24 still has a mountain of improvement ahead. Quite magnificent.

I have been a huge fan of Maxwell's for a LONG time and have been sick and tired of hearing people on this site calling for his head - has sh*t me to tears for a bloody long time - I am glad to see he is starting to get his due recognition - he is a very important cog in the Pies armour - and is easily in our best 22!

1-0

sounds like a soccer score...but it is Nick Maxwell's Captaincy Record...coming against the Dons too.

He has won me over

i have previously wondered where he fits into the team

That Harry, Goldsack have gone past him down back
That Rusling, Reid would be ahead of him up forward

But his attack on the ball, and man, courage, leadership and 4th and 5th efforts mean he is a def in our best 22.

Just not sure where id play him??

Mick plays him in the forward line because he traps the ball. He's not a goalkicker, but he can kick a goal every now and then. I'm not a big fan of him, to be honest, but he helps his teammates around him and he attacks the ball.

He makes his team mates play better games. He is also a good defensive forward on the likes of Chad Cornes.

I don't think he has improved much this season at all, last year was great from him but it was ignored by most of the footy world, and he's finally getting some praise.

Also I think he has kicked more goals as a defender than as a forward.

On talent alone he is not in our best 22. I admire the guys work ethic, courage and willingness to do the job asked of him by MM.

I think his improvement is testament to the importance of having depth within a list to apply pressure to keep ones spot in the 22. Its great to see Wakes also not give up his spot....both are prepared to fight the likes of Presti, Cox, Harry and Goldsack for their place in the team. Clement will have to do the same, although his superiority in skill and ability will see him come back into the 22.

Having said all this, I am still not convinced Max is in our best 22 despite all the intangibles he brings. But he is a valuable member of the club and is the kind of guy that makes those around him better

Not bagging you Ct but I notice a common trend developing. You rate most players very highly but tend not to rate the types whos roles are not just winning the footy but 1%, spoils, tackles etc etc. Guys Like Maxwell and Ja at reserves level dont seem to get much recognition from you. I get the impression the high possie flashy players appeal to you and you may not notice these other types hence you dont rate them. I could be wrong but as you post as much as anyone on this board and have alot of opinions on players thats the impression I get. Do you think this is a fair comment?

I just think that in the modern game guys who can work just as hard off the footy as on it like nick maxwell are extremely valuable. Maxwell was more important on the weekend than some of the blokes who got double the touches. I love the kid. After scotty burns he is probably my favorite player.

I agree with everything you have said, maxwell is very hard at the ball which creates opportunites for the other players which would not normally be there. To me possessions are meaningless in this modern game, it is and always will be what you do with the ball either when in possession or in fact when trying to gain possession. Definitely in our best 22.

On this best 22 stuff...Mick Malthouse and other coaching staff surely rate him in our top 10...by that, I mean, he is one of the first 10 players picked in a side. Purely not based on talent, but those intangiable football qualities.

THATS A FACT.

The best thing about Maxwell's game the last couple of matches, is his ability to provide a good hard contest. At first, I was wondering why the hell is Mick persisting with him playing forward. But I soon realised what was his job; it is not to score the goals, but to keep the defensive pressure up inside our forward 50 so a Thomas, Davis or Didak can swoop and score.

Any goals he scores are bonuses!!!

Lets not get crazy over 1 good game fellas.

Before last week he was floating about without much purpose!
I don't agree that he has been floating around with no purpose.
Maxwell has been the glue that has been holding together the backlne for most of the season. I think many on these forums grossly under estimate his value and I think the fact that he was named Captain is an indication of the faith Malthouse and his teammates have in him.
Just for the record I pocketed a 50 thanks to his captaincy this week...I bet a mate $50.00 last year that he would captain the club...I certainly did not expect it to be so soon.

Maxwell has that something which yu can't put your finger on but you know it's there and I hope he is around for many years.

No..a fact needs to be, you know, factual. That's an opinion. I do think he's in the best 22 atm but would be borderline (i.e. form-dependent) when the whole team is fit.

He is a utility player... put him just about anywhere and expect to get a 50/50 result or better.

I like the way he goes about his business, true leader on the field. Always looking out for his team mates at stoppages, loose men, etc... I like it.

He is a def starter in our best 22. I was never a big fan of his prior to the last 2 years but now he is by far my favourite (well behind Licca anyway). I love the way he goes about it week in week out. He is never high is in disposals, but his 1% are outstanding.

Go Nick!!!
