Hopefully Hardwick's ridiculous 'experiment' of playing this kid in the backline is over and he is given a chance up forward in the senior side VERY SOON. Here's his report from the VFL on the weekend:

Matt McDonough
3 goals, 17 disposals, 7 marks Started up forward and played through the midfield in patches. Marked the ball well and had four shots on goal. I think he could’ve ended up kicking five or six goals. He continues to improve as a forward and hopefully he can push for senior selection in the next couple of weeks.

Was bloody good on the weekend.

^^^^^ forward with time on the ball. A natural attacking player getting tossed around in defense
That's DH style you have to learn down back first before you go fwd ,sadly DH never went passed this level himself to know any better;)

Could be the small forward we desperately need. I'd play him in front of Lloyd and Gordon.

IMO that move down back was about one thing - getting his defensive side up enough so we have someone who can replace King as our defensive small forward

Also looking forward to him stepping up again soon

Has McDonough played much midfield for the VFL side this year (or have the coaches been playing him at either end instead?) I seem to recall he might have had some queries over his tank/stamina when drafted and so might have been a ways off from playing midfield. Would love to see him come in for Conca and be given a go in the guts. Has a nice nuggety build on him!

Settle down folks, why do you think Chad Wingard, Hayden Ballantyne, Lindsay Thomas, Eddie Betts, Luke Bruest, Mark Le Cras, Jamie Elliott and Robbie Gray are all so average. They haven't learnt to play back pocket yet.

One of the SA teams is going to nab McDonuts, play him forward and reap the rewards. Can't wait to see how we use the pick #76 we receive in return.

He has played a fair bit in the midfield for the VFL. Also they used him as a transition player from defense to attack due to his elite kicking.

I still think DH overdoes the defensive stuff with our players
When is he going to just tell the boys
"Back your natural instincts guys ,don't take a backward step and rip the arse out of these suckers bc you're better than them"??????

I hear what you say BUT playing back during the development years will improve his forward game IMO plus adds another string to his bow. Doubt we will lose this kid from what I heard ;)

We need to play this kid forward, if we do that, we will see the magic and talent he has!
Exactly attacking footy. Yes it's great to defend ,but there comes a time when you just have to back your ability and let the opposition stop you

Why do people have a problem with him playing HBF??

He is a brilliant reader of the play and a beautiful kick. Everything you want in a quarterback/HBF.
Good point but how many running half BF can you have? We have a small fwd issue which has gone for too long unnoticed and Madonna looks like he can do the job

Plus he's 5 foot 2 and was one of the if not the best small forward of his draft year.

He doesn't really play like a small crumbing forward he plays more like a marking medium forward. I'm not sure he is fast enough to be that small forward we really want.

Bit closer to 6 foot.

You're right, but we have a small fwd issue and he smart enough to play there IMO
Arnott was a write off when he played there and Gordon doesn't do it for me. Which then leaves Lloyd , but I think he has defensive deficiencies and is still inconsistent
Lloyd is still a bright prospect ,but Maddona seems to have more options as he could rotate in the midfield or go back if Houli and Morris are having howlers

It's fair to say his defender days are over.

Never doubted it. Give the kid a education and a taste of what life is like for a defender, show him first hand how mids and forwards work, once that education is established release him to play his natural game forward. Sounds good to me!

I see this kid being a Knights type. HHF who meets the ball, turns and either hits a team mate on the tit or kicks the goal himself.

I am excite!

He went forward in the last quarter of the North game and was just a natural on the lead and nearly crumbed a goal. They've played him mid/forward since then in VFL and he's a dead-eye shot and takes a lot of marks for his size, a natural forward.

As was the whole point of getting our own VFL team all along, it's for development. See Lennon starting on half-back before moving onto a wing two weeks ago, 27 touches and a big influence on the game. All about teaching the young boys the way you have to play to get a game.
