I haven't bought a general admission ticket for a cricket match at the MCG in a long time, so I was wondering whether it was still possible to sit wherever you want with a general admission ticket (excluding, of course, the premium seats), or whether all tickets are now allocated a seat in which you must sit?

Nah you haven't been able to get GA tickets for MCG international games since the Pakistanis were here in 2009. Real pain in the arse. Interestingly there is an option this year through the ticketek website to buy general admission tickets in bays M1 through M6, although this is a designated Sri Lankan Fan Zone. The Aussie fan zone which is around the bay 13 area for whatever reason is not general admission...

Thanks, Irish. That's a real shame. I assume then that there's always a ticket guy around making sure you don't sit in the wrong seat?
Actually if you wind up with a shit reserved seat in the sun or something and go and sit somewhere else you'll probably go unnoticed since the security aren't really on the ball with that sort of thing. I actually did this on boxing day. I had some shockers on the ground level and snuck up to the third tier of the ponsford after lunch where there were plenty of empty seats (presumably cause they're so expensive) and stayed there the rest of the day without a hum from anyone. You'll probably need to stay in your allotted seat though at least until most people have stopped coming into the ground. After that the people who check tickets seem to doze off
