Just watching Media Watch expose Today Tonight and their 'journalism'. The stories they report, especially relating to assylum seekers, are down right disgusting and immoral.

Hammo doesn't get a lot of love around these parts, but I tell you what - he ain't alone.

Just looked at the replay. I dont watch Media watch too often, perhaps I should start. Margaret Thomas "I would have perferred to have been told the truth". Indeed!

I am reminded of this type of thing in the 70's when Vietnamese boat people received luxury living in Darwin and 2 cars. At least that was the word at the time. Not much has changed.

I think that it is only fair that each country should protect it's borders but with that in mind the mass movement of people through the times has been non stop and many a war has been fought. Read about Partition in 1948.

If one looks at the figures we are but minuscule in the scheme of things. In terms of Afghan refugees 63% are in Pakistan with 34% in Iran. That is 97% in total. That is a total of 2.7 millions peoples. Germany is next on the list with 1%. I first became aware of this while reading a book called Taliban by Rashid Ahmed. It was sobering, to say the least, to read about the vast humanity that was effected by the extremism of religious fundamentalism and super power politics, peoples who had little choice but to flee their circumstances or die. That includes Iranian's. See the recent case of Marzieh Vafamehr.

It is sad that a crap TV show make such a hash of an important subject as this and appeal to humankind's base instincts. Sadly many will except this appalling piece of journalism as fact with not once referring to other sources.

It's funny when the show Frontline was made it was fairly accurate but now the standard of "journalism" on those shows are a lot worse than the very poor standards set in the 90s.

I don't understand why anyone would watch TT or ACA.

I just finished viewing Media Watch from last night. It just confirmed my opinion and I am hoping the opinion of many other Australians. If you leave your war torn country, travel half way around the world and then get on an overloaded boat to head for Australia you probably have some legitimate claims for refugee status.

Who is next?

Haven't watched Media Watch for a while now but used to really enjoy it immensely.

I am often the recipient of "those" emails that tell you how unfairly we are treated and how much these people receive from the government. One quick google search and I generally reply with the truth from our own governments website. Often these messages are started in places such as Canada and are then bastardised to suite "our" conditions, and were actually false in the originating countries, and I still get, "There has to be some truth in it, I've read it / seen it so many times"!!!!

We're a bunch of rednecks getting divided by a clever person so he can be PM. Divide & conquer with the boat people just one part of the wedge.

Just my opinion.

Spot on. As it was in 2001, immigration is nothing more than wedge politics.

On a spectrum of importance of Australian policy issues, immigration isn't even on the radar, but it's a nice controversial issue that splits the electorate down the middle and distracts them from bigger picture issues.

I'd rather see the election debate tackle issues like:

- How we utilise windfalls from the resources boom to diversify and develop our economy for the future.

- Developing regional Australia into a place where people want to live and work. Our population is dangerously concentrated in a few urbanised areas and it is not sustainable.

- Seriously tackling aboriginal disadvantage. The apology was meant to signal the start of meaningful progress in this area, but once again, the issue fades into the background.

The resource boom is the issue, forecasts predict it will continue for some time due to the needs of China and India. What concerns me most is that our environmental standards will be compromised and once forbidden areas will be open to mining as we search for more and more resources.

The money doesn't seem to be used for improving infrastructure.

Our urban growth seems to be controlled by the housing development companies, where once houses were built around industry now we just build houses anywhere and everywhere.

If it's not mined here it will be mined in 3rd world countries in Africa, South America and Asia where there is little to no environmental standards. Plus look what's done to Western Australia's economy and what the OD expansion will do to South Australia's. All mine sites have to be restored such that it can be used for other purposes post-mining. It's not like the old days where you can totally ruin the environment.

Exactly.

The thing that frustrates me most is that shows like TT and ACA aren't held accountable. Media Watch made it quite obvious that TT blatantly fabricated the story from old clips and incorrect facts whilst breaching the Journalist code of ethics - and yet there are no repercussions. There aren't a lot of other industries where such incompetence would be tolerated.

The fact that people treat these shows as a worthy source of news is just downright scary and puzzling.
