I'm gonna start up a thread for what is a often discussed issue.

It seems strange to associate our backline with any 'issues' as it is pretty much rock solid, but one little area keeps popping its head up. Those persky medium-tall leading forwards. They base themselves in the 50 and are generally straight line leaders.

Guys like Jack-of Anthony, Lecras/McKinley, Lonergan/Gamble, etc etc can pop up and hur us, usually because they will have a missmatch. Usually too quick for Truck and we don't want to waste Bock deep in defence (he also usually has his own job)

We have undoubtabley the best CHB FB combo, great small defenders like Johncock, McLeod and the Emerging Petrenko, Midfield defenders like Otten and Symes as well as appearances by Goody and Radar etc but we don't yeh have that third pure defender who is quick off the mark, smart, accountable and can also hurt the other way.

I guess what i'm getting at, and this is a player who really intregues me....

Is Phil Davis this guy?

He's been described as a forward back and mid. Called a Chad Cornes type etc etc

So can he be the guy who can fill in when we need the type of defender, and when we don't he can go tot he wing, loose in D, forward etc?

Or is it someone else?

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

It's probably going to be Otten judging from where he played on the weekend. Bock can cover them pretty well, Rutten gets done on the lead but still does a good job. We have a good defense but we aren't going to keep the other team scoreless week in week out. Some players are just going to kick goals no matter what. Our zone tactics will help cut those sorts of players out of the game though with players chopping off leads etc.

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

Well he played as a medium defender on the weekend and did some really nice things and got 19 possessions. Had like 88% efficiency and probably made 1 or 2 errors, not even that bad. He's quick and agile and won't need too much strength work because he gets into good position.

I like the possy he played on the weekend, but who did he play on?

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

Otten may be the one.

A developing one may be Aaron Kite. The right height, is said to be athletic, and Drummond and -CG- have often mentioned that he sticks right to his man and doesn't let them get away for a second.
This is the one I was after, I can definately see Kitey doing this role.

Which poses a follow up question. Where is Davis going to play?

It was hard to tell because of the zone lol.

If I had to guess I'd say he was on Ben Ried for a bit who did nothing. I think he was on John Anthony for a bit too. He was probably rotated onto smaller forwards too. He played the Stevens role where he chopped in front of leads and what not.

And I like that, he played as the zone off defender.

But players like Anthony will need a dedicated man to defend them. That's the player i'm after.

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

psst you lot, remember no 34? Greg Gallman as well...

Kite, Otten and Gallman are the three on the list that immediately spring to mind. Add in Tony Armstrong as well.

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

Where is Davis going to play, you ask WALL-e?

If you listen to Rendell, the answer is wherever he damn well pleases! :p
hahaha, thus the Cornes type comparrisons I guess.

He's just a player that really really intregues me.

I'm PIHLing now

Phil Davis MY BOY haha

Big call Nikki, he's currently built more for gliding han being a KPD, but lets hope he fills it our a touch.

Yeah I forgot about Gallman. Kite and Gallman would be front runners then, with Davis as a wildcard, he could be a Ruck.....Mike Sheahan thinks we need em.

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

Non-issue imo. Depending on the opponent, the development of our player and structure a combination of Otten, Kite, Symes, Stevens, Young, Lee or Dangerfield could step into this role.

Remember our last player who wore no 34? played a few games from memory and body type was very similar to Tony Armstrong.

Watching Tony play live against Box Hill a couple of weeks ago, he was very, very impressive. His poise and ability to time his punches and leaps at the right time was very good. That is something that is almost impossible to teach. You either have it or you don't. He has it. His positioning to cover for his fellow defenders was also a pleasure to watch. That is what that third defender does best, ala Hart and Bassett.

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

Can't believe I forgot "my boy" pre-season. Gallman. Absolutely the perfect candidate for the medium forward role in the short term. Long term, I'm pencilling him in for the tag.

At present, Stevens and Otten are the most likely candidates for the Bassett/Hart/Massie role. They are not super quick but they have the footy smarts to ensure they don't get disgraced. Johncock plays taller than his height as well so he could take a Medhurst/Motlop type. Longer term, Kite and possibly Gallman are the two main candidates to take a 3rd or 4th defender role.

Not sure who plays on Milne this week. If Johncock misses this week, then perhaps Doughty.

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

Otten has that deceptive quickness.

Ask Marty Clarke.

First the don't argue then a shimmy and spin to break away.

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

Didn't get much of a chance to show it on Saturday, cos his first steps always look awkward (although, not necessarily slow either) but at full press he is very impressive. Add to the that his sharp turning circle for a 192cm player, he's v impressive.

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

If you mean Bass's role, I saw this kind of role being James Sellars last chance at being here in 2010. Notice I used the word saw not see. Otten did the job well this week.

Gallman is the other one I would of thought to take up the role.

Wasn't Moran recruited for this role?

Re: Medium-Tall Denfender

He got 3.06 for 20m at draft camp which is a bit better than average for a KPP and a bit slower than average for a midfielder I think. He's quick enough though. No speedster but agile enough.

I have him down as 2.99 in the 20m, and 6th overall for the agility run.
He's got dash for a bloke his size.
