Need help here folks.

I'm doing my year 12 Media Studies SAT on the topic of Melbourne. You need to plan to the extact detail what, when, how, etc you're going to shoot, and then do it. I need 10-15 shots.

So, what does Melbourne mean to you? What things about Melbourne do you like? What represents Melbourne to you?

Remember, it needs to be able to be photographed, so make it realistic.

Trying to get some help

first you cheat at footy, now you cheat at this.

Typical hawks supporter:rolleyes:

For me, it's the small things that unite Melbournians, but in such ways as to totally differentiate between demographic groups.

Take coffee. Chapel St, Acland St, Brunswick St, etc you can always catch up with a friend for a coffee. You can always get a latte. But the people in each of these areas seem so totally different. I am equally out of place in every one of these locations, but for totally different reasons.

Same with the footy. Go to a blockbuster and there will be 40-odd thousand people going for one of the sides, but they are such different people.

So anyway, that would be my theme. Immense cultural diversity linked by common urban activity. As for how to photograph it? That's your problem. When I was a boy, Year 12 was for proper subjects like English and History and Economics, not these new fangled bludge subjects you kids get away with these days! ;)

Good luck with it.

the things i like about melbourne r - the general atmosphere, just walking through the city is amazing i luv it. especially around the outskirts of the city. ummm and also the city at dusk it very nice.

then u have the villages and strips around the place, like Chapel St, St kilda, Fitzroy carlton etc......the little parts of the world right in the heart of melbourne almost. I would look at melbourne ad a huge bowl with everything u can imagine crammed into it, there r soooo many things to pick. if you're topic is just Melbourne there is so many things to pick from. do u have to pick one thing and focus on it or do everything?

I agree with everyone else about Chapel St, Lygon St etc, they all have their own style & attractions, also the Zoo, I absolutely love the Zoo, I am just disappointed that I haven't been there for about 5 years, might try & fit in a visit this trip.

Also the MCG, I always get a tingle down my spine when I see it.

Is it just on Urban Melb, if not I love the Danenongs, Emerald, Healesville, Olinda etc, it is so tranquil & you can see the city from most of areas, nothing better than & balmy summer night in the Dandenongs looking down at the city lights. MAGIC. :D

The beautiful western suburbs!

The place I call home!

Watching a 16yo pregnant girl shooting up on heroin at a bus stop with housing commision flats as the backdrop....

...ah, the serenity!

No.

I call it Friday night!

 :D :p

You can hear dat in da next suburb? SIIICCCCCCCKKKKKKKK!

Yeah, thanks people. Keep 'em coming.

So far, I already have the MCG on a Friday night, with a stream of people heading into the ground from afar as one of my proposed shots. That represents the sporting side of the city. I am planning to shoot a lonely railway station with one person waiting on the platform to represent the outer suburbs. I am planning to shoot a busy Flinders St/Swanston St corner at peak hour to represent the crowded city.

I have a few other things in my head too, including the Yarra, maybe the Espy. Just trying to represent different sections of the Melbourne lifestyle.

A tram has to get a gig doesnt it?

For a "busy city" shot - Flinders St station from accross the road at peak hour.

I was with two Americans once at this time and they said it just reminded them of NYC. It did look pretty cool.

Fibros and silvertails emerging side by side from under the clocks at Flinders St?
And you definately need to get football fans, decked out in scarves and jumpers, getting on or off a tram. If there's 2 things Melbourne is famous for, it's AFL and trams.

Have to agree with Daics, The Yarra is Melbourne down to a tee. Live right near Studley Park and right near the Yarra; it is the most peaceful place in Melbourne.

Yep. The Yarra is gonna be one of the shots. Whether it be inner city at night with the lights and boats or upstream somewhere in the bushier areas like Studley Park, I don't know.

(An outsiders perspective)

First things I think of attraction wise in Vic:

Dining in Carlton

MCG packed to the gills, fans streaming along Punt Rd
Vs.
The humble local footy club

Espy in St Kilda & other pubs/clubs
(Can't remember half of them though! The Tote - is that still there?)

Vic Markets (Jam DOUGHNUTS!!!!)

Flinders St Station

Groovy (and CHEAP!) Trams - you people down there don't realise how damned cheap your metro travel is!!!

Richmond shopping (well the wife does anyway!)

Windy Hill - Mecca (I'll understand if you don't wanna put that one in!:p )

Laughing at junkie goons hanging at Swanston st at night (Reasonably sure I wasn't going to get stabbed!)

Cruising on the Great Ocean Rd

Torquay - Bells.

What about Springvale Safeway? And the people who hang out the front?

Considering I was born in Springvale, and went to primary school across the road from the Safeway you are talking about, it would be fair to say that your comment is an insult to me.

But I'll cop it on the chin. ;)

Before I offer any suggestions Hitman, tell me, must it be melbourne or do the suburbs fall under the umbrella too? And either way, must you have a certain theme running throught he procession of shots?

Ok Hitter something that hasn't been mentioned, the Shrine of Remembrance, certainly with ANZAC Day around the corner you might get some decent photos...?

Take a shot of the Crown Casino.

Perhaps inside somewhere, like the Grand Staircase entrance.

Outside, take a picture from the other side of the Yarra looking down the river, including the casino and perhaps those flame things that burst up every minute or so.

Wagstaff I think you know what I'm on about. Nothing on the suburb just the scum that frequent it, like any other suburb.

I am focusing more on the actual city area, but I am having one shot representing the suburbs.

There is no running theme. Just 10-12 shots on Melbourne. I am trying to get shots that represent something though. For example, a shot of the MCG will represent the sporting culture of Melbourne, or a shot of Flinders St or a tram would represent the transportation - such an important part of most Melbournians lives.

I just thought of one which could represent historical past: something inside the Old Melbourne Gaol or Museum.

Keep 'em coming, got a few fresh ideas already. :)
