What was that melee about? News just said that there won't be an investigation into the melee. Obviously Andy Lovett at the centre - some heard on umpire mikes.

As far as I can tell, Lovett and Montagna had been niggling each other all night, Montagna bumped Lovett as he ran to the huddle at 3/4 time, and Lovett and Davey retaliated.

I didn't see any punches, and I'd say Montagna, probably Lovett and possibly Davey would get charged under the new "inciting a melee" rule. I think that's only a fine, though, or possibly 40 odd points.

Montagna past ran and gave Lovett a solid bump at the end of the 3 quarter. Lovett was fired up and took offence to it.

Wasn't too much going on apart from those two and the others trying to seperate them.

Lloyd last year had to sit out 2 games because of something stupid as that. They said Lloyd charged from the back and that it is the sort of thing that starts a Malee.

Montagna said this morning that Lovett had given him a deliberate cork, so he started up at him. Though he also said they are great mates and all was good afterwards.

the two were mates and played at the northern knights together. a guy i know (likely story, ha i know) said that when montagna started getting looked at all those years ago, lovett became pretty jealous and the two drifted. add to that the adrenaline in footy, and i guess it got a bit too much for them.

Don;t think thats totally correct. Montagna made it seem like they hng out a fair bit. Really good mates. Maybe they made up, lol
