What do you think are some of the reasons for the slump in membership? Last year's form is obviously a problem, but even some good form this year hasn't fixed things. I would expect the reasons will vary for different people so I can only speculate:

1. Poor value for money if you can't get to a lot of games.
2. Moving home games to Docklands diminishes value and maybe annoyed people.
3. You don't really feel a member of anything - it's just a pre-purchased entry pass.
4. Years of false advertising has finally caught up - "join up and see the Tigers roar" gets a bit hollow after 20 years of failure.

Your thoughts?

If we get a good list of ideas together we could send them into the new CEO!

I think you covered most things - people don't trust Richmond i guess. Been there and been let down too many times.

I also reckon pay TV has a lot to do with it. Even if they're not showing a live game, they'll replay it in full a couple of hours later and people might just prefer to buy the Foxtel membership and forego the Footy Club membership and just settle to watch on TV and go to the occasional game. I've got Foxtel and many a game I've been tempted to stay home (especially away games at Colonial) and watch in comfort.

It's not just Richmond - all clubs should be up around the 25,000 to 30,000 members, but it's not happening. Unless clubs get something more back from television rights, they will not survive on their membership earnings alone.

Perhaps it is emotionally draining following the Tigers and people are - well - emotionally drained!

Some clubs just go about their business with the minimum of fuss and make the finals as a matter of course On the other hand, we cannot do things without large slabs of melodrama!

sad to say but there have been so many broken promise,s in the past and supporters[ex members] have had enough.
while i understand their stance and believe me i even had 2nd thoughts this year about re joining i believe the club has finally woken up that they have to do more for the members.
i dont go for the idea of this phone give away cause then the new members are joining up for the wrong reason and will hold off again next year for a similar deal.
why not instead:
*one member per game can join spub in the coaches box
*2 members can sit in the room pre-game.
*one member sit on the bench
etc etc.
*a certain amount off each year if you sign up regulary.

surely things like this would be more attractive.

cheers!
