i am having troubles with my computer. I cant cut and PASTE anything, including files and even paragraphs of text. Links don't work and I have trouble with other things as well, like not being able to play multi-media files.
Could this be because of lack of memory on my comp????

if so how do I fix this???

Install more memory...

I have worked with computers since 1986 and still don't know ANYTHING about how to open up the case and add/remove/replace/vacuum anything.

I know ****loads about computers, but none of that hardware stuff.

So it may be very possible that shmardin doesn't know how to fix a memory problem, and, cohabitatively, not deserve the rolling of one's eyes!

Here's two things that probably make me look stupid but I honestly don't know them :
- How do I get Explore to open at a default directory of MY choice and not the computers?
- How do I get Explore to open WITH the status bar present by default?

First, delete anything you don't need on your hard drive.
Then, install more RAM.

If you don't know how to do it, get a friend to come over and do it - don't get it done in a shop unless you know the people who'll be doing it.

Mobbenfuhrer - no idea on the first question, but for the status bar, open up Explorer. Turn on the status bar (View>Status Bar). Then click View>Folder Options. In that, there's three tabs, one of which is View. The top bit gives you an option to make all your folders have the same view options.
That should work.

Cheers, I gave it a go :)

Change the target of the link for Windows Explorer to C:\WINNT\explorer.exe /e, c:\downloads\

Change the WINNT bit to whatever windows system folder name you have and make the c:\downloads\ bit whatever target directory you are after.

As for the original problem, sounds like the system is goosed.

RAM only fits into one type of slot, in one direction due to the way its cut. You merely have to push it down until the clips can be clipped onto the RAM. And you're away.

I would be more worried about buying RAM compatible with your PC.

Thanks Jim, I understood everything except for the bit I quoted!

By saying the Link, I mean the desktop shortcut, right-click on it and choose properties.

This won't work if you open explorer by pressing down the "windows" and "E" keys simultaneously.

You could however change the location of your "Personal" shell folder, which defaults to "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents" to any folder, which will have an across the board effect on Windows Explorer as well as Word etc.

i had the same problem briefly...is it still a problem mardy?? cos it went away quickly for me, but was annoying while it was there. i didnt do anything to get rid of it, just stopped happening a few days later. donno what it was, try running ur anti-virus program if its still a problem.

It must be a virus as I have the same problem right now. I've ran a virus check but it didn't find anything so I'm not sure whats happening or what to do about it, but it must be a virus.

i work in a computer store and this cut and paste thing is a virus of sorts have many people coming in with the same thing even saw it reported on a cnet newsletter,
