ANSWER TO PREVIOUS MENTAL CHALLENGE

UPSIDE DOWN, MISS JANE
What five-letter word, when written in upper case, reads the same upside down?

Answer: SWIMS

The good Mr Dan Liebke, our Chief Statistician, always ready to outsmart us if possible, yesterday asked me, "Do you always believe what you see?"

I said, "Usually. Why?" So saying, Dan pulled out a pack of cards and selected four cards from the deck. He showed them to me. There was an ace, a three, a ten and a jack. He arranged the cards in a certain order and then laid them out in a row, face-down on the table.

I said, "This is that dumb trick where you ask me to find the jack, isn't it?"

"No, my friend," he smirked. "This is that dumb trick where I ask you to find the two jacks that are in those four cards!"

How is this possible and where are the two jacks?

Answer will be provided next month.

Does Ace + Ten = Blackjack??

That would mean there's a Jack and a Blackjack, which I suppose could be the 2 types of Jacks.

If that's not it, I have no idea.

Like the picture of the jack is a mirror image therefore there are two?!

That's terribly unclear, but its my answer.

Thats what I reckon too!

I think this line points to ScouseCat's proposed solution as the correct one. If only the ace and ten were laid side by side would there be a blackjack.

thats what i was thinking too.

The 2 Jacks, obviously there is the Jack and then there is the J, the A, the 3, the third letter of the alphabet converts to C, the 10 which converts to K in the alphabet.
Remember the guy telling the story was a statistician.

i thought from the outset this was pretty lame. sort of like primary school lame. starting to get like the Police Academy films. wearing as thin as a Christina Aguilera outfit. not that there's anything wrong with that.
