My Daughter just told me the reason for the black arm bands worn on saturday was because of the most tragic circumstances involving Premiership defender Merv Keane who lost both his wife & daughter.I,m not sure if its been mentioned on here(looked for a thread couldn't find).
My condolences to Merv on what should have been a celebration that has turned into a nightmare.:(

Tragic to say the least.
Drive through Wycheproof often and it always make me think of #18 and how bloody good he was in that 1980 flag, kicking two goals.
Very sad!
Yep.Can't imagine what he,s going through.

Daughter committed suicide, son also developed cancer that week she passed and the wife couldn't handle it so took her own life also.

Puts life into perspective :(

It does.:(

I lost a great mate last week, who was an old work colleague at two workplaces, and another mate recently to suicide, which has been cause for much reflection and taking stock.
But Merv's situation .. as you say ... just can't imagine what he'd be going through. The most awful of circumstances.

I'm sure the club are getting around him. Horrific news and condolences to the Keane family.

Sorry for your loss mate.As Downtown mentioned it does put life into perspective.

Thats awful. I also read on facebook we lost a life member 3 days before the big dance so i assumed thats why the players were wearing armbands. :(

I think this thread could do with some links and contacts such as lifeline in the OP tiger_of_old or mods? Similar to what's stickied on the main board.

I'm stating the bleeding obvious, but this subject is as serious and real as it gets in life.
No problem with that at all mate.Mods if you like.

It's easy to forget these legends of the game have lives just like us and don't just run out on the G on the weekend then disappear when they retire. Too young to remember Merv but seen plenty of him from videos on youtube etc. and love the way he played. Hard running and long kicking player really good to watch. Can't imagine what he must be going through but hope he can pull through it somehow.

This is such cruel news.
Deepest condolences, Merv.

Very sad news. My wife asked me during the game on Saturday who the black arm bands were for. I had no idea at the time.

Condolences, Merv.

An unbearable and unimaginable loss for him. I couldn't possibly ever imagine what he's going through and hope that I never will.

Condolences to Merv and his extended family.

Done. And was certainly glad to do it as most on this board know mental health disorders are something that hits home for me. Glad to do it. The more support and awareness we can raise, the better.

Really feel for Merv. What an absolute tragic set of circumstances. No parent should have to outlive 1 child, let alone 2. Add into the fact there were elements of mental health disorders and poor Merv must be an absolute wreck. Feel so sorry for him. As someone who has personally experienced suicide of loved ones, I can relate to how he must be feeling and it is something I hope noone ever feels.
