Lately I have been reading several stories in newspapers about meteors that have been passing fairly close to Earth (still millions of kms away). If we knew that a meteor was heading for Earth do you think that we would be able to assemble the resources to destroy or divert it (like in Armageddon etc.) or would it just be a count down to the impact?

The 2 main determinants are:

1 - its size
2 - how early it is detected

If it was big and fast enough, no human made device could deflect it away from earth.

How do you stop the NSW bushfires. If they are big enough man is unable to stop them within a given time frame.

Nature is stronger than humans, whether its hurricane, bushfires, tornadoes, or meteorites.

so far they havent discovered any metorites that pose an imedient threat to earth although they have recently discovered a couple which may next century i think
although they arent 100% certain as of yet,my guess is they will probably miss too
sometime in the future though if we are posed with this threat i believe we will be able to advoid it if we detect it early enough

Obviously not a natural blond, Johnny?

The threat could come at any time. Just last week we had a very near miss. That particular meteor had only been discovered in late December. Not even a month advance nor an RSVP.

It doesn't take a very large meteor to do the trick either. One that is "only" a kilometer across can spank everything between Sydney and Melbourne.

IMO you can pop a nuke at one of these far enough out and change its vector. To my knowledge, none of the nuke-owning nations have ever gone on record to state they have a nuclear weapon anti-meteor system in the works - let alone in place.
