It means how many metres they make during the game. In layman's terms it's a good sign IMO of how effective a possession is. There's a huge difference between getting the pill and passing it off to the nearest teamate ASAP and running 30 metres and kicking it to the forward line.
It is a bit misleading when a player keeps bombing the ball long and Watts is sitting back and intercepting it instead of passing sideways to a safe option.
But yeah, overusing the footy is worse than moving it forward.
