Meyer's hard yards win over boss
07 March 2005 Herald Sun
Digby Beacham

IT might have been March and more than 1000km from any official AFL ground, but Terry Wallace was a proud Richmond coach on Friday night in Alice Springs.

With captain Nathan Brown icing a corked right thigh for the last quarter, Wallace watched as his unheralded youngsters stood tall to lift the Tigers to a two-point win over a youthful, committed Fremantle line-up.

It continued Richmond's solid pre-season under Wallace, who will fine-tune his build-up to Round 1 with a hit-out against Brisbane at Optus Oval this weekend.

"We have to start to learn how to win a game and, from that aspect of the game, it was really pleasing for us," Wallace said.

"We lost our last 14 games in a row last season and we were 25 points up in our first Wizard Cup game and lost that, so getting them back into a winning experience and winning environment is important.

"It wasn't a real quality game by any stretch of the imagination early, but I thought the guys fought it out pretty well in the end.

"At the start of the year, we said we were going to try and be competitive in every game we played.

"We've played three matches now and won two of them and had the other game where we were in a winning position and lost it."

Shane Tuck and Kelvin Moore were influential as the Tigers mounted a comeback from 19 points down early in the third quarter.

Lightly built teenager Danny Meyer, selected at pick 12 in last year's national draft, also caught the eye.

"You're always looking for some quality players to come through and sometimes you may think they might come from your 27 or 30-year-olds. Then, all of a sudden, you get an 18-year-old," Wallace said.

"I thought Danny Meyer . . . playing down forward was outstanding. When the game needed to be won . . . he ended up standing under a crunch ball where he got thumped by about three or four players.

"There are just those little things you look for.

"I knew he was a player that had natural brilliance in his game, but whether he was physically tough enough to take the rigours . . . he showed he was tonight."

***************************

Meyer, Moore, Tuck.... great to hear some lesser knowns and new blood showing some guts. What were Hawthorn thinking letting Tuck slip through. Then again they let Tambling get to us.

Thats ridiculous. For someone starting their career last year i thought he showed more hardness then half the players. Frawely *********d up his confidence when he put him on mcphee when mcphee was on fire. I think he has plenty of promise

Aren't you sick of living on promise? Every player on our list last year had "promise" and look what happened. I wanna see promise turned into results. Brad Ottens has had promise for 7 years and yet the early signs are he's not showing geelong anything to be excited about.

Tuck was moved on by hawthorn let's not forget.

100% on the money!!

Tuck should of played alot more than he did last year, he was outstanding for Coburg, its just that Frawley is a dud coach!!

He reminds me of Martin Pike, he will be valuable for us as a link player through the midfield.

I know what you're saying but he's only been on our list 16 months. Its not really fair to take it out on Tuck for the return on high draft picks like Ottens.
He was delisted by Hawthorn because of injuries, not ability, only now has he had a really good run at getting some form.
He showed "promise" last year, but Frawley held him back, now he's being given a chance he's starting to produce "results". Lets just hope its a full season of them.

Exactly, he played pretty well against Brisbane last year, so what did he get for his troubles? omission. Great work there dud Frawley.

I'll stand corrected, but I think Tuck has a bit from the Ablett gene pool (isn't his mum Gary Ablett's sister?).

As TW has stated, his dad Michael was a let developer in footy terms. From memory, so was Gary Ablett.

Not saying he will be anywhere near as good as his dad or uncle. But he didn't get a fair go at Hawthorn and wasn't given one last year by us. Has shown enough in the pre-season to warrant a place in the 22 in Round 1 IMO. He then needs to be consistent enough to keep his place for the season. My feeling is he will.

 well one thing is for sure, his old man certainly didnt like Danny much - LOL

there was some night in his honour held in the TUCK room, and during the night Geoff Ablett had to interview him over the microphone through the room, and Geoff mentioned Shane and now that we (RFC) not going so well, if he thinks he will get a bit of a run - Tucky, who had a few that night, then went on to say something along the lines of "Danny Frawley is a useless ********ing prick and can't coach for ********" the room booed him - lol
Apparently Tuck can be a bit like that, just not sure what he is going to say

LMAO Grumpy.

So do I.

Im actually gonna go the other way on this one and have faith.

I like what I've seen and think i will back the kid to be a great player for us.

I get the feeling he is the type of kid who has to do the classy things on his own, without any major involvement from his team mates.

I like that.

Tuck BOG, Past 3 games.

Granted, he has been in our best every praccie match thus far.

My main issue is that it may have been due to his bulk and size. He may not be able to perfrom the same in the season proper than he has done thus far against kids.

ok fair enough i see all of your points. Lets play him round one in the midfield and we'll see how he goes. Then we will revisit the topic

id give him (Tuck) a go right through to about the half way point of the season no matter what. with Rodan out and Coughlan i still feel being nursed and not physically 100%, we are going to need someone with a hard body to win and contest those scrumage's & in and under balls. I think we should really give the "if-y" players this year a real decent run in the seniors (10-12games on the trott), in their PREFERRED position, and by the end of the year - have a absolute clear view if they are worth it or not. The word is out @ punt road, cut it, or be cut. And i like that

Morrison, Tuck, Hilton, Pettifer, Tivendale, Chaffey - The past is forgotten both good and bad - It all starts now.

Go Tiges! Bring on Round 1!! Can't wait to see how these guys react!

Re: Tuck

Looks like he's impressed the Coach.

Tigers turn discard into tough midfielder
09 March 2005 Herald Sun
Mark Stevens

SHANE Tuck is poised to complete a stunning rise by muscling his way into Richmond's starting midfield for Round 1.

It is understood the son of Hawthorn legend Michael Tuck has already been inked in as the man to add bite to the Tigers' centre square set-up.

If the Tigers were voting on a pre-season best-and-fairest, the 23-year-old would be a clear leader.

Tuck, who managed only three games under Danny Frawley last year, was discarded by the Hawks after two injury-riddled years on the rookie list.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace conceded yesterday Tuck wasn't too far away from being cut again at the end of last year.

Now the buzz at Punt Rd is the club could have something special on its hands.

"He's playing really good footy. He's certainly been in our best few players over the past few weeks – certainly in the Essendon game and the Fremantle game," Wallace said.

"He'll get the opportunity to play on-ball in his own right again at the weekend.

"The reality is, the first game is only a couple of weeks away so he looks more than likely to step in for Round 1."

Wallace is hoping the addition of Tuck and Mark Coughlan will add steel to his line-up.

At 188cm and 89kg, Tuck is a jumbo-sized midfielder. He has his famous father's height, but a completely different frame.

"We need to make sure we can strengthen up. In Coughlan and Tuck we've got someone who can do that," Wallace said.

"He (Tuck) goes in, wins his own footy and kicks it 55-60m when he gets hold of it.

"He's big and strong enough that he can win the ball inside the pack and be physically strong enough to get boot to ball in some tough situations."

Tuck was taken at No. 73 in the 2003 draft. General opinion is he went so low because of wonky kicking and poor decision-making.

But Wallace has seen little evidence of those problems over summer.

"We're very, very happy to have him," Wallace said.

"He probably would have been one of the last ones on our list come the end of last year, but I just thought there was something there."

Wallace, who played alongside Michael Tuck and changed alongside him in the locker-room, said family history had a bearing on his call.

"Tucky played a lot of reserves footy before he made it. That was in the back of my mind. If you know the history of the family, you take that into account," he said. "All we've done is given him his opportunity and he's grabbed it."

Pull the other one moron.

Tuck has played against the Bombers + Freo kids in the last 2 matches.

As a 23 year old bulky, solid type you would expect him to do very well.

Idiot.
