MGS vs Scotch

MGS have dominated the competition this year and this is the final hurdle. A win and it means they are the victors of this great match for the first time in a few years. Added to which it will be the first premiership for the school since 1995. MGS are definitely the classier side with the likes of May, Lappin, Carter and Shaw. Included in this class aspect are 10 scholarship kids who have been instrumental in MGS’s success. Whether they are here for football or giving them a better shot at life is unimportant. They know how to play and have to perform if MGS is to win. Despite this Scotch will be lurking if there is anything a miss. Bull has the ability to turn the game on its head like he did last year and Strausee will be oozing class through the midfield all day. Add Hummer and Foster (should be playing) into the mix and you’ve got a pretty good building block to work from. I’m unsure if any Rioloi’s are still at the school but I’m sure if they are they will be prominent.
The MCG provides a unique and once in a lifetime (not for some of those playing) chance to play at the home of the great game. Who knows which side will be suited more at the G but it is safe to say Flack Park (MGS's home ground) is similar in dimensions.
Whatever eventuates it will be an enthralling battle and one always has to expect the unexpected. Scotch’s win in exactly the same circumstances in 2005 is surely not going to happen again.
MGS by 16 with Carter best on ground.

Can any of the 1s guys tell me how the guys with the injury clouds (bennett, shaw, v-w) went tonight? Did they train at all? How long will they be given to prove fitness?

lachy bennett is definitely out. Hughy is fine, but shaw pulled up propy tonight. i think his left shoulder popped out a bit, and he didnt look great. will have to prove his fitness tomorrow night.

Hummerston and Foster both have been playing twos so not playing, and shannon rioli was dropped a few years ago so not playing.

No doubt Melbourne Grammar will win the match and thus the premiership. But it will be a hollow victory. In any club competition, the winner would be based on percentage or a finals system. Finals have been ruled out so percentage should decide the premiership if teams finish with an equal number of wins. If this were the case, Melbourne would be out of the running. As I said, a hollow victory.

it wasnt a hollow victory
the atomosphere ate the G today was amazing
better than anything any other APS event could cough up
grammar deserved this cup and they beat hailebury so therefore should finish higher

I think everyone is in agreeance that the way the premiership is decided is a bit of a joke. 2 weeks of finals would be ideal, and the APS grand final would attract a huge amount of people. 3-4 thousand easy some would say.

however, i dont think its likely to change in the coming years. no matter how desperately we want it.

Credit to both schools - the atmosphere was fantastic and made for a great game. Scotch tried really hard but just ran out of petrol tickets in the last quarter. Melbourne Grammar deserved to win, they were the better team on the day and had a dominant target up forward. Steven May can start looking for houses on the Gold Coast now I reckon.

Great atmosphere. Even some heavy rain at times didnt damper the enthusiam from the thousands of guys from both schools who were watching from behind the goals. Fantastic stuff.

Well done to all the guys who played too, put on a good show. And I agree with what GoaldenHawk said about May. I think he kicked 4.4 today.

the game easily had 3-4 thousand and was basically a grand final anyway...that match will go down in the books for years to come

MGS thoroughly deserve the flag for their performances this year.
They defeated the other 3 teams who were most in contention for the flag: Haileybury, Xavier and Brighton.

Certainly the season structure is antiquated and in desperate need of an overhaul, finals are used in every other competition (as are 4 on the bench) and it should have been changed a long time ago.

We shouldn't discount the excellent year that MGS have had. Obviously they brought new talent into their side, and why woulnd't you for your 150 year celebration.

Well done to Brighton and Xavier also, who played great footy throughout the season despite not having any scholarships. Equal third for the honest schools is a terrific achievement. Perhaps there could be a second trophy awarded for the schools without scholarships!!

I agree.

The other issue with the system is that most sides are now affected at some stage during the year with the new Vic Metro and Vic Country format.

I think MGS and HC met earlier this year with full lists available. But had they met while HC had 4 guys at Vic Metro, or had NT qualified for Div 1 and MGS wouldve been without Ah Chee, Heenan, Hale and perhaps May for a number of weeks then it'd be a different story. Or even last week when MGS had May, Mitchell, Keath at the U16s carnival. The premiership may be decided by "good luck" which isnt ideal. I think a final would be a lot fairer.

great performance by the boys best players were may and goddard. De Steiger contested really well and won nearly every hitout. mitchell played well but couldn't kick. may kicked a 60m behind. i can't believe he's in year 10. any footage of the game would be nice. i heard a rumour that abc had it coverged and tom morris was commentating

mitchell played well but couldn't kick.
Yeah, three behinds...strange cos other times I've seen MGS he hasnt looked like missing - even with kicks from distance. I notice he's been added to the Cannons list for the rest of the year. Can play.

May was the focal point in their forward line, Goddard popped up and kicked a few goals later in the game. Heenan looked flat, Ah Chee and Hale in and out.

Scotch drove Strauss into the ground, he covered loads of territory and was stuffed in the end. Designated kickers are fine - so long as the player who takes them actually plays down there! The number of times he had to run 50m just to take a kick in seemed crazy.

very true, when you take out 2,3 or even 4 key players from any side they are going to struggle, a final would be a great option, the atmosphere would be fantastic,

luke kicked 5 behinds not 3 and he also kicked an out on the fool
I'm sure he'll be happy you correcting that.

Perhaps thats right, but I've got 12 behinds for MGS marked down in my footy record and only three are beside his name, I'll trust my stats I reckon even though I couldnt see a bloody thing in the third qtr while the lights werent fully on!
