Essendon effectively got pick 5 straight out for Carlisle last year (thanks to Sydney getting involved we got something additional with him, but that doesn't change the fact Essendon effectively got pick 5 straight-out for him) and I would have thought Hurley now is worth slightly more than Carlisle was then- due to him having more runs on the board, him not having the evident psychological issues that Carlisle was showing and him not having a potential WADA ban hanging over his head- so I imagine Essendon will ask the world for him if he wants out.

Then again, he is a year or two older than Carlisle, is coming off a year out of the game and I definitely believe Essendon got "overs" for Jake (for the above reasons in particular).

Why are people even discussing Rance...?

1. Rance is a Tiger lock.
2. Hurley is after success and its blindly obvious that Richmond are at clean out stage.

I think he will either stay and work out a backend compo deal or end up at one of the Sydneys...

They are not equal at all. Rance is the best defender in the game, and is in his own league above Hurley. Don't get me wrong. Hurley is a very good player. But he isn't on the same level as Rance who some people (not myself) believe is the best player in the game right now
Your right, neither Hurley or Rance are close to been the best player in the comp. The best players are the ones that win games for their clubs. Rance happens to be the best at saving Richmond's ass from some monumental hidings week in week out, and this in turn gives him opportunity to show his wares more often then most other defenders.

Hurley is being severely underrated here, Is absolutely in Rance's league no question about it.

Rance is the best FB in the comp and Hurley the best CHB in the comp.

That said we won't get what he is truly worth, If he leaves we will have to take unders unless he chooses a bottom 6 side with a great pick or GWS.

We still have Jong, Stevens, Campbell and a few other fringe types unsigned.
It seems we're keeping our options open to try and upgrade our picks to satisfy a trade.

Did you no that Rance on meters gained against meters lost is the worst in the AFL --when will everyone learn his Richmonds problem takes the mark and goes backwards..

Think he ends up at the Saints and Essendon finally get their man, Billings.

St.kilda will have one of the best young lists if he ends up there.

Its easy to forget how good Hurley is when you havent seen him play for a year. Im at the stage where I accept him leaving but have to try and snap myself out of it. Players like him are critical to us moving forward and up the ladder, not sure what else we can do to show him this. All the young guns got good exposure to playing at AFL level and we unearth a few gems and will cut the weeds at seasons end. Merrett has taken the next step and we will add a number 1 draft pick to the list. Oh and an excellent proven coach and the club is running all above board. What else could Hurls want.

list of exactly what drugs you pumped into him???? maybe? Oh but thats right - you cant or wont tell him that. Sadly , "cant" is the greater of the two eveils ... I can see why you wont.

Very smart move by the Bulldogs - often being seen to being doing the right thing is as good as doing the right thing ... by the AFL at least.

He plays on the last line of defence - how does he kick backwards, pick out a member of the cheersquad?

He does take a lot of intercept marks between 30-50 metres out and instantly goes sideways or backwards to a stationary player.

EFA

Isn't that the Tiges gameplan?

Personally i think hurley is worth a single pick on his own between 7-9 or of similar value using multiple picks or a pick and a player
IMO the following would be reasonable...

- #2 or #3 by themselves
- 4-6 + 3rd rounder
- 7-10 + 2nd round
- two teen picks

Surely with the advent of future dp trading whoever he chooses (if he decides to go) will be able to meet this. It basically values him at around #2 or 2500 points, which for a proven AA key position player (albeit mid-career) seems pretty reasonable.

Yeah he's a real liability.
Try watching the game, not the stats book.

There is a precedent. See the Dangerfield trade of last year. Widely regarded as the best player in the comp. Pick 9, which turned into pick 11, pick 28 and Dean Gore. And Danger didn't have the whole ASADA saga sitting over him, or just missed 12 months of footy. How does Hurley compare to the best player in the comp ??
Hardly a precedent when Dangerfield was a free agent and all adelaide seeked to reclaim was greater value than what they would have received in compensation. Hurley is contracted, like Adam Treloar I suppose. So why are we using a free agent as the precedent and not a trade involving a contracted player? Because you're hyping up the DFA option or because this precedent better fits your narrative?

Either way it isn't relevant. If we don't agree to the trade, Hurley remains at Essendon. Adelaide did not have that option. Might as well be chalk and cheese. If Hurley looks to leave in 2017 then this would be a very different story.

No club will pay 2 firsts for Hurley. He's not worth that and if you ask for something like that or as dumbass Lloyd puts it "an Alex Rance type deal" (Hurley's not worth anywhere near Rance) then Hurley will have every right to try and get his contract voided because you guys didn't fairly give him the chance to leave after putting his life in danger the last few years.

Essendon needs to realise they're not in some position of making demands with Hurley. They have to let him go for a fair and reasonable trade (say a top 10 pick or equivalent) or he's going to be able to get his contract voided

Considering that Hawthorn were prepared to offer 2 first rounders for a cokehead in Carlisle than I would suggest 2 first rounders is a minimum for Hurley.

Have you been in a coma for the last 2 years or do you not understand the situation they are in ?? The banned players have the option of invoking a clause in their contract and instantly becoming delisted free agents if they choose. So it aint chalk and cheese at all when being compared with Danger. Danger was a restricted free agent, which at least gave the Crows a move in regards to trade talks. If Hurley wants out, he is gone. So thinking he stays cos he is contracted or has tradability similar to Treloar is ridiculous. Why do you think the club had to get all the banned players to re-commit to the club ???

I guess if you've been hearing about the doomsday, DFA, leave-for-nothing, get-****ed-essendon option for years and still watch your club put together decent trades for players who you've been told are going to walk for nothing, you really start to question whether it's as big of a deal as you make it out to be.

The only people who still peddle this crap about players leaving for nothing via the grievance tribunal are people who have no idea what the grievance tribunal is about nor what will be involved.

Pump up the scare factor all you want, but I'm all out of ****s to give. And the field in which I grow my ****s is barren and won't be producing any more.
