Simple question, do you respect Michael Long?

Yes or no, discuss if you wish.

Gun wingman at his best, but not the uberpwning champion of the game that Essendon people believe him to be - not his fault though, probably would've been if injury didn't annihilate him.

Lol.

Oh boy, has the question in this poll been watered down.

Whatever happened to "all time champion", "legend of the game" and "main instigator of aboriginal football"?

I voted "No" in the knowledge that the aim of this poll is severlely distorted from the way the question has been presented.

Great player, crueled by injury. Certainly held at a higher reverance at Essendon then elsewhere, but hey - every team is allowed its heroes :thumbsu:

AFL Hall of Fame, Legend at Essendon. Two time premiership player, Norm Smith medallist. Two time All-Australian. As a player he received ABSOLUTELY no accolades at all

Off the field, his actions resulted in the AFL vilification code. He took the Long Walk as a protest against the Howard Governments' refusal to apologise for the Stolen Generation (since done by later Government) which is now an annual event, and is the AFL indigenous programs manager. As an off-field spokesman he received ABSOLUTELY no accolades at all

And you voted NO. Why? Because even those without any value to offer are allowed to speak in Australia, and on BigFooty.

Seems like he did just as you asked actually.

He is also one of the most universally respected people in the AFL.
This is an invention of the media.

It has no basis in reality.
Clearly with a statement like that you wouldn't have the slighest clue.
I am happy for you to set up a poll in order to guage how much public support there is for your "hero".

Hahaha, why did you edit your post?:o

Couldn't find any room for these gems?

He is also one of the most universally respected people in the AFL.

And.........

Both for his abillity on the field, and possibly more important, his stance on racism which was the catalyst of change in the AFL.

Or, how about...........

The AFL may be the most racism free sport in the world - and Michael Long had no small part to play in that.

Seems a very, very, very, very long way from..........

"Michael Long - Simple question, do you respect Michael Long?"

Still, if the readership are dumb enough to get sucked in by that, then power to you.

Could have something to do with the fact that I'm only responding to the points he made which you quoted?
Is it that hard to understand? I could probably draw you a picture if it helps.

This is a pretty decent summation. Those who don't rate Long, get some footage of the 93 Finals series. After a great years,Long was far and away the single reason we won the flag. We were 42 points down at half time in the peliminary final agaisnt Adelaide when Long was moved into the centre a proceeded to rip the ball out of there again and again to carry us to a Grand Final where he had 33 possessions. (16 years ago football was not the high posession game it is now and for a run and carry player like Long 3 possessions is huge.)

Then look at his next 5 seasons where he should have been at his peak.
1994 0 games
1995 22 games
1996 2 games
1997 5 games
1998 9 games

Some will remember him for the Troy Simmons incidents whe he was a frustrated player whose career had been destroyed by injury trying to have an impact.
Some will remember him for the 93 finals series when he was a good as it gets.
ALL should have a good look at what he has done since he has retired for the indigenous community.

Frustrated player? What are you talking about? It was in a GF and Essendon was clearly going to win when he did that. What did he have to be frustrated about?!

Long was a good player and he did alot of good in football, but don't try to rewrite history to make your stance look better. It takes a special type of person to do what he did in that Grand Final, like or hate it he'll always be remembered for his good and his bad actions.

Reread the whole post and not just in part. By 2000 Long had played about 50 games in 7 years and had totally lost his major weapons - his speed - he was a shadow of the player he once was. I don't condone his action but I do see it as that of a frustrated man struggling to have an impact.

Big bit of our improvement from 98 to 99 was due to M Long. There's a lot of poo being thrown on both sides of this argument, and to say he was on par with guys like Eagleton is pretty ripe.

It's good to see that you don't condone his actions however being frustrated is still a weak excuse for what he did. You post would have been much better if you had of left out that statement completely.

Long was a very good player, but he also played the game to it's absolute limits. He began in an era where that type of play was more accepted, now though, it doesn't look very good on his resume.

I'm happy to acknowledge his ability and his service that he did to the game and to his culture, but I don't respect him.
