Melbourne intends to rookie him, so they haven't cut him completely loose.

He's a big kid and will only be 23 next season. At one stage he was supposed to be Neitz's successor. Had injury troubles, but nothing fatal from what I remember.

Does this throw a spanner in the club's Goose plan?

Newton is an absolute dud who has done nothing in about 5 years in the AFL. He is quite possibly the worst player in the AFL.
